StingingVelvet: Just because there was continuity between 1 and 2 15 years ago doesn't mean 3 will follow suit. I'd ditch any expectations you have about this game, and not just in story. It could be very different from 1 and 2 in a bunch of ways. It's a big team, it's not going to be like Pillars of Eternity.

Leroux: Oh, I don't have any expectations with regards to the story. In fact, this discussion started when I said I see no need to continue the story from BG2, and Sarafan already confirmed that it will be a completely new story. I just said I find it a bit inappropriate to add a 3 to the classic 1+2 when 1+2 tell a complete connected story and 3 is something entirely different. Basically, just like you said, I expect BG3 to be completely different from BG+BG2, so it would have made more sense to give it a new name (but I understand why they didn't do it, of course). Anyway, it's not something I really care about a lot, just an observation.

I guess I'd have preferred Larian doing their own thing and not be bound by D&D, WOTC and Forgotten Realms lore, but I'm still mildly curious what they do with it. Mostly gameplaywise though, as I never perceived them as outstanding storytellers.
Yes, once you add that 3 in the title it's gonna come with some expectations and those are justified and if Larian doesn't want people to expect the game to play in a specific way or have certain characters in the game then they shouldn't have used the name Baldur's Gate 3 in the marketing.

lolinc: I'm really glad that Larian is doing this, and not some out-of-nowhere-gofundme studio; these days, I can't think of any other legit studio qualified to do this. I'm very optomistic of the end result.

Sarafan: Apart from Larian, Obsidian and inXile have the potential to bring us a good BG3 game.
Yes, I agree!

Both those studios have been in the business for a very long time. Actually, I think, Obsidian (Black Isle Studios) had already started on BGIII. . . The Black Wolf, was it?. . . but Interplay let the D & D license slip out of their hands. . . after all that, I doubt they'd ever touch it again: I sure as hell wouldn't. At any rate, I'm so happy with their lengthy success, impressive really.

I think inXile was also founded via departure from Interplay. . . and kind of followed suit with Obisidian's preference not to pursue the the license-issues further.

I really can't blame them

This assumes the upcoming title will complete the list of games called Balder's Gate. Think of the Star Trek franchise; the second movie was not related to the first in any meaningful manner, and it began a trilogy of new characters and events. I expect this is the aim of the new game, to create the basis for Four, Five and probably Six (with expansions, cosmetic armour and DLC, etc.).

The whole point of using the name is because it has cache; marketing a sequel to a great game will provide the new IP with a halo, and a lot of people will buy it without further prompt, or at least look at it favourably when it is released.

As long as they do a reasonable job the franchise will survive and provide the bean counters with a good return on their investment. And there is a small but not-insignificant chance they will do a good job and that will create a new big beast studio for subsequent AAA game development.
Some people still trying to come up with any rationale beyond "friggin big net worth and name recognition!" why the game is called and plays in "Baldurs Gate" and not Leilon or Waterdeep or Suldolphor or Suzail? (okok Suzail aint't at the Sword Coast) :P

Its from Larian so it will most likely be great, but do not lie to yourself regarding why the thing is called what it is called.
