It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Do you think I am right. if so perhaps bring the message here on to people that might listen. Otherwise tell me why I am not:

I will be using my old phone as an example:
I got a iPhone 4 that still works as good as when it was new. It has always worked really good as a PDA (but the phone in it is the worst I ever had. It is quite bad at keeping connection with people I talk with.)

Now the phone is 5 years old and I cannot update the IOS on it from 7 to 8. because of lack of support from Apple. New apps are restricted so they can't run on IOS 7.
This is in an artificial way making my phone useless. Prompting me to throw it out and by a new one.
Even though the hardware is a good as when it was new.
Even essential and simple apps like the “find my iPhone” don't work anymore because it "artificially" can’t be upgraded.

The mentality behind that is a terrible waste of resources.
I should always be possible to use a device until it is worn out and brakes.
I wonder how many millions phone (and other gadgets) that needlessly have been thrown out and replaced because of this kind of policy.
I think it is irresponsibly to waist the resources of our planet in that manner.

When one look at my little phone it is not a big problem. I can just by a new one.
But look at the big pictures...
I think that resources for billions of dollars is likely being wasted on this planet because of this kind of policies ...

Companies should be forced to support their creations for its physical lifetimes. And not be allowed to shorten it artificially.

PS
I work for a NGO witch promotes renewable energy.
It gives me a really low salary but I can fell proud of what I do.
So I kind of speak of a topic I work with every day.
I have never brought up topics that is work related here on GOG before.
So I hope it is OK i write this political subject.

I had a similar experience, but with an iPhone, it's a bit harder to find alternatives rather than buying the newer model. I suppose you could research jailbreaking to see if that could extend the use of your device.

I, too, have noticed the increased amount of planned obsolescence coupled with the increase of newer models that are incompatible with the older versions being produced sooner than previous years. The race to stay on top of competition and keep reaching financial forecast goals in order to keep the investors happy have instigated this alarming trend.

I first became aware of a serious problem when I read an article about the problems LCD monitors caused in landfills due to mercury and other toxins. Since then, tech has improved to reduce or eliminate the mercury, but another point of the article was that the push for newer and better models created a faster rate of refuse for landfills.

I'm very worried about this... But don't forget to support your economy! It's your civil duty as a consumerist! =P
Buy a Nexus phone next time. Those usually get updated with the newest Android. I hope that Apple users wake up one morning and realize that iPones suck and there are lots of better options.

But the phone still works "as is", correct? I don't find that a correct definition of useless. Underutilised fits better.
Sometimes the limitations are hardware related. The apps might not even conceivably work if you don't have such and such processing power. They don't build them future proof, just good enough to work for what can be used at the time.
This world today is the pinnacle of wasted resources, going only for pure consumerism, profits and tons of consequently resulting waste, with absolutely no thoughs whatsoever at future preservation, conservation and generally well being of the human race on the long term.

tdlr: this world is doomed anyway, sooner or later
My toaster won't connect to Bluetooth or WiFi. Nor is there a app that toasts bread. Just digital bread.

For some apps Underutilized is correct. mostly newer one, but for others it is not. The phone is likely slower than a newer model. 1 cores versus 2 or perhaps even 4.
For some newer programs/apps it wold simply make them run a bit slower, while for other they wold not run properly at all.

Problem though is that some apps that worked nicely 2 years ago now don't.
Like the Find My iPhone when started I got a message stating it needs updated in order to run. then when trying to update it ask for upgraded IOS. When trying to upgrade the IOS I am told to buy a new phone.

Aded:
Did I mention that I also have a iPad 2. It happens to be older that the iPhone 4. But apple stils sels it.
Guess what. It can be updated to IOS 8 and 9.

yeah that is bullshit
but apple has started the mass culling for older i devices with ios 10
http://arstechnica.com/apple/2016/07/48-hours-with-ios-10s-first-public-beta-build/

The iOS 10 support list includes all of the following devices:

The iPhone 5, 5C, 5S, 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, and SE
The iPad 4, iPad Air, and iPad Air 2
The iPad Mini 2, 3, and 4
Both 9.7 and 12.9-inch iPad Pros
The sixth-generation iPod Touch

i have an ipad 3 so i am screwed as well

but the thing is that iphone 4 is 5 years old that is an eternity in the mobile market where things move fast
you also got 5 years out of it
and there comes a time where the developer has to cut off old and osbsolete hardware because it becomes unfeesable to run the new OS on it

would you want to run windows 7 on a pc from 2001 ? and then use it daily ?

so the ride has to end sooner or later
and 5 years is a pretty good run

those ipad 2 shenanigans are bullshit though

Have you tried turning it off and then on again? Its possible that ToasterOS needs the latest drivers which you can download directly from Hovis.co.uk
Apart from a toaster I don't have a clue what any of you people are talking about. :P

no that was 3.02 they pushed this one out quickly to fix that
Interesting, but even humans themselves become obsolete over time, because we get old and the stuff we acquire gets older than dirt faster than we do. It seems that the only omniscient being alive over time will be one with no moving parts.

What fun would that be though? :)

It might be the George Foreman grill.
