Crosmando: I'm no collector, I'm just stockpiling all these games for the nuclear/zombie apocalypse when I'll be stuck in some bunker with my computer for the rest of my life. Unless of course the bunker has no electricity, then I'm fucked.
I've had a similar plan, but the problem is not electricity but the effort and money it would take to build the bunker.

I don't consider myself a collector really but I probably am one. Not so much as in I do it as a primary reason, merely a bonus of enjoying a variety of games.
Is there any reason why you can't be both?

Collector, first and foremost. And a very selective gamer. To beat a game, especially 100%, it has to be as close to my demanding tastes as possible.
I have thousands of games in my game library, most of which I haven't ever even installed.

I play them as I see fit, which happens to catch my attention at a time. Maybe someone mentioned the game on a forum, or I had a dream about the game, or whatever.

Now I am e.g. playing Freespace mostly, already completed the base game and now playing the Silent Threat expansion. I probably bought that game originally over 15 years ago, and didn't even install it until maybe 6 years ago the first time, and stopped playing back then.

Only last year I re-installed it again (this time the GOG version, as I didn't have Silent Threat with the retail version I think, and I prefer playing the game without the CD).

What after this? Honestly, I don't know, but I am sure I will pick some other game from my library after this. Could be Freespace 2, could be Fallout, could be Independence War, could be Deus Ex... the possibilities are endless!

I am not a collector as in looking at my collection and marvelling at it, smelling the fresh ink on my GOG games etc... Quite the opposite mostly, e.g. I got rid of the game boxes of my PC retail games in order to save space, and also I am not interested into non-gaming content with my GOG games (like soundtracks, videos etc.). I just want the games, in order to hopefully play them at some point.
Not really I just opened my account here. But i am trying to make myself as a gamer.
i would love to say i am a gamer
but considering i got more games than i have played and it only keeps growing
well ill let you take a wild guess
A mix of both but if I ever get the chance or get in the mood to play it I will

amrit9037: But good thing is there is a wifi signal of a government office where one of my friend live (and we know it's password as they have written it on wall on which router is kept) and whenever I visit him I download my games. :P
LOL Ah, yes, official information security at its finest!
I collect games that I will eventually play.
I try lots of games b/c I don't like lots of games. I'm a gamer who hates games.

But when I find one I like, I love it.

Examples:

Bardbarian - loved it. It's stupid. I love it.
Alpha Protocol - everyone loves it now, I guess, but it's supposed to be terrible. :)
Civilization 4 - everyone hates that game but I love it. Wait. Nope. I love it and so does everyone else.
Baldur's Gate - one of my faves.
Peggle, Plants vs Zombies - yay Popcap!
Sim City 3000 - okay. 4- yay! 2000 - eh.

See? I could go on about all the games millions love and I don't, millions love and I do too, or weird indie titles that either suck or I love.

I get games cheap, I try them, and if I like them, then I may save up for a release date title for a sequel or the dev doing another one.

I think most of us in these forums are the same way. But most gamers (96%, right? - someone had stats on that ages ago) have fewer than a few dozen games that they have in their entire library. I'm one of those guys with a library of 500 and I like maybe 60 of them. But I'm always happy to try a new one. That sense of discovery and peering into someone's creativity is a big thrill for me.
Um, I guess it partly depends on how I count the 20+ games I've received for free from GOG over the past eight years---that's only counting the limited-time giveaways, sales where there was a random chance of picking a game up for free, games awarded for going over a certain price point during a sale, and a couple of "guess-Thursday's-game-and-win-a-copy-from-a-blue" instances. I'm not including the always-free games. (As an aside, thanks GOG for all those opportunities for even the most broke gamers.)

Some of those games I may not ever play, but I wasn't going to pass up the chance to acquire them.
I used to be a physical game collector (meaning at one time I had 400+ physical games neatly sitting on dust-free [as in I constantly dust and re-shelve them]) bookcases, but since 2012 I've switched completely to digital. I may call myself a digital archivist rather than a collector (the only physical collections I have now are Sega Saturn, Super Nintendo and the first five Etrian Odyssey releases across DS and 3DS), and while I have almost 300 digital games spread across GOG, Steam, Mac Game Store and HB, there's two games that I play constantly for relaxation between coursework and work (Cities in Motion and Minecraft [city project that I want to release to the public]).

I do purchase a ton of games on sale and even a couple of full-price titles when I either have disposable income or during Spring or Fall Break, but even though I've picked some really decent-looking games, they simply sit on two hard drives while I'm either studying or playing my "main" titles.

Since one of the views shared among the above posts concerns whether or not digital games can really be called "collections" thus questioning the "collector" classification, I'd call myself a digital archivist. With my backlog, I may soon be a digital game librarian.
Mostly a collector (of RPG's mainly), but I tend to play some of the games from time to time. If I buy a game, expect me to buy the rest of the series, same thing with DLC.

There are also many games that I used to play as a kid and those are mostly for collection, I only replay them once or twice in a year.

I guess I classify as 80% collector / 20% gamer, would probably be a tie if I had more time to play.
I definitely consider myself a gamer but i also do collect games that i like & those that i think i wld like to give it a try in the future. However, due to work i hv quite limited time to play the games i owned so sometimes i do see myself more as a collector than a gamer unfortunately. :(
