rtcvb32: Hmmm, i got 3.5, Pathfinder, Neverwhen, and Herosystem 5&6... As for location and possibly playing, not sure. the biggest problem seems to be finding a group with the same time(s) as you.
That's why I was thinking of the very slow way via email.

I wouldn't dare ask for a big setting or such. Something simple that could be played slowly and when all who are in could reply when they had time. No rush or push. But I am daydreaming here. Hehe

I played D&D via forums a few years ago, PbP (play by post) and... did a 24 hours in-game, and a year in real time.... And the whole time playing or not, a portion of my attention and focus and overhead was to the game. It really wasn't worth it. Though we did go up like 4-5 levels in that time while doing a couple missions....

I miss playing in person. Rolling the dice, Counting body (herosystem), but never got characters above level 4... not really...
Though it's been a year or so since I played D&D proper, I have played it myself extensively and my group has plans to play it again in the near future.

My own story with D&D and tabletop RPGs in general is rather unusual. D&D was something I always wanted to try out, but because I live in a country where such hobbies are almost non-existent, there wasn't really anyone local I could play with. So I pretty much had to turn to the internet for help from the very get go, getting my start on a play-by-post forum.

Initially, I dabbled into 3.5 every now and again, briefly trying out 4th edition when that came out. I never really managed to get into a game that got going properly, which consistently ended up killing my brief sporadic interest. It took a few years before I was inspired to give tabletop RPGs a serious shot.

I went back to 3.5 and got involved in quite a few games. I had a decent time, even though campaigns consistently kept dying off either because of real life obligations or simply a lack of continued interest. But I really got into the swing of things once I joined a group of my online acquaintances for a 5e campaign on Roll20.

Not only did we end up seeing that campaign through (though the sequel campaign did eventually die off), we ended up playing a ton of 5e. For the longest time, that was almost the sole system we used. But as our affiliation helped me meet other people who played tabletop RPGs, we started to delve into other systems, such as Pathfinder, World of Darkness, Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader, Cyberpunk 2020 etc.

Right now, we primarily play using custom systems that we ourselves created. That said, we do plan on returning to 5e soon, doing a follow up to another campaign that we managed to play through to the end.

In terms of where I play, as I mentioned earlier, I used to primarily use a play-by-post forum. But with my regular group, we've been using a combination of Roll20 and Skype/Discord. Admittedly, though, this is heavily reliant on whether you can sync up times with other players, especially if they're from different timezones.

it's been about five years since I sat down and drafted a campaign as a DM, most of the games I Dm'ed for went to marathon times as the unpredictability of the players made an interesting ride, and the critical failure role that inevitably got rolled caused some Great mayhem I could quickly adapt to.

Don't get me wrong I also loved being a player in a match, unfortunately the Demon Ex decided that burning every book, DVD, VHS, or model was a perfect message to me that she hated me, too bad she was too stupid to realize that 90% of the stuff she burnt was worth a lot of money.... a complete set of 1st edition, 2nd edition and 3rd edition books, as well as several autographed items, from Gary Gygax to original Anime movies autographed by the voice actors and the director.

I miss playing.
Maybe you can checkout Rpol. Theres several forum based games, real slow. I think GMs have to move it along and auto resolve combat often. Theres several forum games out there.

Darvin: I had the opportunity to obtain some old D&D books a few years ago and looked it up. It turns out the boxed sets are the only things worth money; loose books haven't even kept up with inflation.
Well, that's a bummer.

It hurt to even read that. The positive aspect is that the loss of your D&D stuff probably overshadowed the loss of your crazy ex.
I'm not playing any D&D games at the moment, but when I do play it's always play-by-post on online forums. I was most recently playing in a long-running OD&D game, and I have played a lot of B/X D&D in the past as well.

I'm currently playing in a Star Wars D6 game, and a Pendragon 3rd Ed. game.

Cool

Been tied up with work.

Just now making my rounds back on here
Since somebody posted in this topic, there's one thing I'm wondering:

Do any of you people use the encumbrance rules when playing?

For that matter, do any of you run AD&D 1e or 2e with the racial level limit rules enforced (and at a high enough level for them to matter)?
Bag of holding laughs at your encumbrance.

Only if the DM decides to put one in the game.

A few tried but I don't recall ever getting enforced.

Ours did. If you weren't aware, the D&D Gazetteer series created expansions past the level limits if you haven't seen them. Either the Companion or Master box set did as well but that was simply for attacks while the Gazetteers actually expanded the classes.
I've played Table top pen and paper D&D First edition and AD&D Second edition.. :) I don' t like the the newer editions. But I haven't played them in over 20years so my vast collection of many Table top games are collecting dust.. :(

But I still have my magically enchanted Dice.. ;P

Love RPGs, but left AD&D decades ago.

I can't touch anything past AD&D 1st edition.
