Mr.Caine: Hexen deserves to be here so much more then something like Doom3 which fails both as a horror game and an action game.

darthspudius: If you say so...
Action shoudn't be slow&dull. And jumpscares aren't horror.

Monitor brightness all the way down, game brightness all the way down and still way too bright. >_<
I really liked the flashlight stuff, it really should've been an option as the game had areas designed with that in mind like a scientist walking with a light and you following him.
You can easily leave him in the BFG edition as you can use the flashlight at any time.
I used the Duct tape mode personally. It just made sense because with a pistol, I can use a light. In fact many pistols come with tactical flashlights attached. Some of the other weapons I can see there being no light. But Duct Tape Mod was a godsend.
Interestingly, Funhaus played the Doom 3 demo on Demo Disc today, and Lawrence agreed that BFG wasn't as good as the original - https://youtu.be/55bfJRxoO50?t=13m51s
I really hope GOG will get Doom 3 someday, but the original version was so much better than the "BFG" edition. The original allows the user to save at any time, but the BFG version just uses "checkpoints" ugh...

That's not true, you can save freely in BFG edition.

I was reading off of this Wiki which mentioned the checkpoint system. If the user can save manually, why does it list a checkpoint system?

Well if it's there, why not list it?

Checkpoints and manual saves aren't exclusive.

Well that's an extremely inaccurate comparison. All right, first of all, flashlight shadows can be enabled via options menu (along with adjustable FOV, by the way). Secondly, yes, the game contains checkpoints - but in addition to checkpoints, you can also save manually. Note that removal of manual saves is not mentioned anywhere, just addition to checkpoint saves.

Because it's primary function was to be a console port?

More than likely, that's the primary reason why the reviews for the BFG Edition are lower than that of the original PC edition. The BFG Ed. was clearly "consolized" and it made the game worse for no reason.

With such persuasive argumentation as:
"the remastered version of Doom III is a very good opportunity mostly for home console gamers to see what the forefathers of the FPS genre is all about, although stiff competition and natural evolution of the genre may put off a large chunk of modern day gamers."

"What is the point of this "improved" edition if it looks much worse than the original DOOM 3 with the fan-made Sikkmod installed?"

"We have been spoilt in subsequent years, which isn't Doom 3's fault. The unfortunate truth remains that it is more of a chore to revisit than a joy."

"It may be dubbed the ultimate collection but even on consoles the BFG Edition is far from ideal. As a PC game its existence is highly questionable; any esoteric changes made on id's part have already been done better by a dedicated modding community."

I have finished Doom 3 like 4 times in the past. Playing through BFG edition for the first time, I'm having just as much fun and I don't have to spend over an hour fiddling with mods that then end up looking visually inconsistent and searching for console commands for such basic functionality as widescreen support or to change field of view. Long story short, BFG edition has been demonized for no good reason - it works well, it's a ton of fun and removes a bunch of irritations from the original game, while also providing a widescreen version of Doom I and II functioning out of the box. It's always best to see opinions of people on something they have not even bothered trying.

Anyway, if you take a look at Steam reviews (in other words, reviews of people who actually bought and played the game), ratings of Doom 3 and BFG edition are pretty much the same.

(I'm also not entirely sure what does "consolized" mean since it still plays precisely the same, it just has a controller support and drops more items on lower difficulties)
