Back in my console days, I had a girl friend who played COD with me. Let's just say, she was the boss, not the other way around. Nobody dared to talk shit to her, while she was angry at Call of Duty.

Reminds me of some occasions during basic training. Walking up, good strong stride in full uniform... some guys were ready to bolt thinking i was about to deck them :P

dtgreene: Well, there are the recent women who graduated from the US Army's Ranger school.

There is famous scientist Marie Curie, who worked with dangerous radiation (although it wasn't known to be dangerous at the time) and died of radiation poisoning.
There is Amelia Earhart, who attempted to fly around the world.
There are the "Night Witches", russian women who bombed the German military during World War 2.

So yes, some women do, in fact, perform dangerous jobs.
I hope those women were paid well.

I personally have seen many women hate gamer men. Bitching like "why are you always at the computer playing?" blaa blaa blaa. The women hate our freedom!

Necroing topics is selfish, ignorant, and disruptive. Please try to think of others.
Is it just me or is it getting impossible to have a normal conversation with normal people on a gaming forum nowadays? Everyone seems to lurch to one political extreme or another. Is there anyone here who isn't a misogynist or xenophobic prick or a white knight SJW? Because I'm honestly having difficulty in finding anyone who doesn't overgeneralise about women, gamers, Muslims, Americans, Europeans, old people, young people, console gamers or PC gamers.

Yes, misogyny happens in gaming. A lot. But call people out on it as and when it happens. Exposing the individual is the best way in shaming them. Like tort1234 for example, who has proven himself to not just be a vile racist prick but also a misogynistic wanker as well. Letting them hide among gaming communities by generalising just lets them redirect the blame.

And the extreme feminist wing/the SJWs really haven't done themselves any favours by desperately trying to exaggerate the problem by raging over "hero saves princess" storylines and bikini-clad warriors.

That's what happens when a social revolution peters out and ends up in the hands of a post industrial age generation that was raised on instant gratification and mindless culture junk food. You end up with people jesus'ing themselves to their favorite cause, everything from labor laws to the public right to urinate on fire hydrants. Premature enlightenment + high tech + rampant narcissism = modern culture.

Or in other words, welcome to the internet.
On second thought, my colleagues are right:

SHIT NECRO TStael.

Then again I suppose it could be worse. You can have brought back one of those fucking Hatred threads.

tort1234: Have you ever come across a woman that works harder than men at their job ?
Have you ever come across a woman that works 70+ hours a week or gets dangerous jobs such as construction, mining, frontline military, etc ?

Women won't get paid equal to men because they work less hours, take more time off and work in safe jobs.
I don't believe you. In my experience women are working as hard as man.

A women that works harder than me and is getting paid the same (at most) is sitting right now opposite of me in my office. So I have no reason to believe in your unbacked and also very strange assumption.

I guess people like to take more extreme positions when on the internet.

On the other hand I really wonder why games so often stay within traditional role models. I mean: Men is warrier, Women is housekeeper, Men+Women+Kids is family. This somehow does not reflect modern reality as I know it and lacks behind it in a certain aspect. And the 1 millionth "hero saves princess" actually can be quite boring, even if every individual one is kind of okay.

Instead of being progressive and mature in a way many modern video games seem to take conservative and also somewhat primitive views on genders or social relations. This is the biggest problem I have with this whole debate.

The truth is instead: everything is possible. It doesn't matter if you are a girl or a boy or something else. You can be anything and can do anything you want, as long as others let you.

Everyone who doesn't believe me, should wait until he/she gets a daughter and then think again.

And the problem is that modern video games could show so much more of what really is the case in our society. It's really a loss because I think we could do a bit better.

I hope I'm not too extreme in this view. I'm not particularly mad at anyone but I try to selectively buy games with an interesting progressive storyline also genderwise or not to buy too many games that are just the same old stuff which is not even interesting.

Sure, I see it as my duty. :)

Also I have given up competing with her. She is just too good for me and I know my limitations. On the other hand although she should probably earn more I'm not willing up to give my salary voluntarily to increase the one of others, may it be a men or a women.

This is the irony of it. Both the SJWs/extreme feminists and the misogynist dickheads spend all their time trying to tell women what they should be. The feminism wing attacks women who choose to be "subservient" (for want of a better word). The misogynist wing attacks women who choose not to be.

The fact of the matter is that many women choose - deliberately and freely - to maintain the patriarchical status quo in their individual situations. Other women choose - deliberately and freely - not to, preferring to be more liberated, career-centric, adopting a more masculine dress sense, or whatever.

I don't think I need to illustrate the problems with the conservative branches of society trying to keep women at the proverbial stove. But there's also a certain hypocrisy in trying to rob women who feel more comfortable in a patriarchical situation of the right to do that. I know plenty of women who were raised to be strong and independent, and still chose to be stay-at-home housewives.

The problem is not in the role or function that women assume. It's whether or not they chose out of free will to adopt that role or function. A woman shouldn't need to stay at home, raise the kids and do the cooking because she is compelled to by social norms or by her husband (or wife, as the case may be), but that shouldn't rob her of the choice if she so desires.

I have two goddaughters, aged 6 and 10. One is the stereotypical little princess - obsessed with pink, plays with dolls and acts at being a housewife (cooking, cleaning and so on) when she plays with other kids. The other is a typical tomboy - trending towards goth style, does karate, plays football, loves gaming (kicks my arse on Mario Kart 8). They might change as they get older, they might not, but the important thing is that they reach these decisions by themselves. I don't doubt that if we exposed them to these activists, one half would be criticising the "little princess" for not standing up to the patriarchy, while the other half would be attacking the "tomboy" for not doing girly things.
