catpower1980: - When and how did you learn of the existence of the AVGN (formerly the Angry Nintendo Nerd)?

Is it basically like PewDieDie, only without the Pew?
Nah, your attempt at humor is too obvious, won't answer that ;)
I've seen all episodes multiple times, and they all get better with age. I don't know how I came across his videos but I know it was before he bacame the AVGN.

My favorites are:

1 - The Swordquest one - when he figures out the clue in the comic book and the Orchestral AVGN plays gives me the chills. And his final speech is also very inspiring.

2 - The ROB episode - just epic. A love letter to gamers and the reason why there must exist shitty games in the world.

3 - The Back to the Future Revisited - The nerd's reaction when hearing the BttF theme done right is priceless.

I ran into it when I first discovered YouTube back in late 2008.
- What's your favorite episode(s)?
I have a few favorites: Sega CD, Spiderman, Friday the 13th/Nightmare On Elm Street. Ikari Warriors (The singing from Kyle Justin made it classic.)
- Did you ever tried one of the mentioned game afterwards just to see how bad it is?
Because I grew up in the 8-Bit NES generation I had already played several of the games, including (I believe) EVERY one of the LJN games that he played.

The only game I played after watching was Frankenstein, because I actually think that game looks really cool despite some flaws.

Really, is this something that every gamer should know? I get that impression from other messages and especially OP's message, yet I have no idea what that is (AVGN). I checked some linked video, nope, still blank. I especially amazed as I get an impression this is something that has been around like a few decades already.

I dunno, maybe it is a similar case like two months ago or so I was with relatives and the movie Commando came from the TV, and a relative of mine (a 18 year old girl) was watching it. At one point she said something like, "Oh, what a big guy." (referring to Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie, the phone booth scene), and I said something like:

Me: "Well, that's Arnold after all."
She: "Who?"
Me: "Umm, you do realize that is Arnold Schwarzenegger, only younger?"
She: "Who?"

After some further discussion, it dawned to me she was completely unaware who Arnold Schwarzenegger is. Maybe she has never just seen any of his old legendary movies then. (It might be also partly related to her probably not usually watching action movies, but still...)

Then again, I didn't recognize some young Finnish singer in Voice of Finland (a singing reality TV program), and she was similarly amazed when I said I have no idea who he is, never heard of him.

Oh well, can't know them all...

EDIT: I decided to educate myself a bit, so I guess he is some kind of video gaming (Youtube) celebrity then:

https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Angry_Video_Game_Nerd

Maybe it is because I am more of a PC gamer than a console gamer, hence I haven't even looked for any "NES Megaman" reviews on Youtube, which might have introduced me to this character.

AVGN is basically an indie pioneer of the online video medium.
He started before 2006, when Youtube didn't exist and the internet movie "scene" was quite poor.
He created fun shorts about a nerd raging on old videogames, consoles and boardgames.
Many popular Youtubers have been inspired by him.

I don't know if you'll be able to appreciate his videos at this time, however.
He's still super indie, with extra-low budget and juvenile nerdy humor.
He's entertaining, but the nostalgia factor is very strong.

P.S: I doubt that anyone really found him by looking for Nes reviews lol

1. I first learned about his existence in 2006 when he was one of the biggest (if not the biggest youtuber) so it was impossible not to have learned about him.

2. I don't have a favorite episode but I always loved the horror movie inspired ones like A Nightmare On Elm Street.

3. Nope. I always took his word for it. :P
1. i was looking about the atari consoles and came about his episode of atari 5200 loved it

2. Castlevania reviews the four parts were awesome

3. i did start the castlevania games after his reviews

Why not? His videos seem to be pretty much about old console games and peripherals, especially NES (ie. part of the gaming culture that hasn't interested me as much, apart from wanting to play all existing Final Fantasy games "just because").
He lost me with the movie, nobody expected anything from it, I know I didn't, but it turned out waay worse than I could imagine. I knew from beginning he should stick to what he does best.

He doesn't do proper game reviews.
Also, I can't imagine someone searching for real info about crap games like Dr.Jekyll and Mr Hyde :P
The videos about old consoles and peripherals were quite interesting, instead.

Ok, watched the megaman episode and gotta say it was right there with the all time best episodes.

I almost cried a little at the end, both at the young nerd speech and at the beating of you-know-who.
1. Around 2007 maybe. I don't remember why I came to his youtube channel in the first place, as I was never a Nintendo fan. Maybe because of MegaCD or CD-i as I remember I was impressed by Chaos Control on CD-i in the pre-Saturn/Playstation era. I'm not so sure.

2. The episode about Christmas Carol, it was so better than the usal nerdy episodes.

3. I don't think so. Maybe there were a few games the other way around, played back then, but definitely not now. ;-)

The show wasn't only entertaining, but also interesting about old games, especially bad ones.

PS: I remember I hated the MegaCD episode, because the system wasn't that bad. Especially from a US point of view, because the SegaCD was more supported by Sega than the european MegaCD. I disliked also his lack of knowledge concerning Sega systems beyond the Genesis, although the Dreamcast's Seaman was very funny (one of the best recent episodes).
