I have to agree that the lack of a Linux or Mac version is disappointing. I'm a big GOG fanboy but with windows 8 coming out and Valve making a huge Ubuntu push I hesitate to buy games from GOG these days.

Darksair: I addressed this issue to GOG support, this is their reply:

Unfortunately we are unable to release Linux versions of our games, so the installer will only work on a Windows system. If you wish to try playing a GOG.com release on Linux, the best workaround (aside from setting up a dual-boot Windows XP system) would be to install and run it through some virtual machine software, though I can't guarantee that these will work. You could check our forums for instructions on running many of our games on non-Windows platforms as well, since manyof our customers are Mac/Linux users.

> Hi. I bought this game. But I found that Mac and Linux version are not provided. Could you provide them so that I can play...?
> Thanks.

So I guess there will not be Linux/Mac version in the near future.
It would be trivial to just upload the game with their installer for the time being and just warn us that the installer is different. (I've had bad experiences with wine, esp running Unity so I want native games + the Virtualbox 3d driver has been less than functional.)

Same here. I absolutely love this site, but gaming is more and more going multiplatform on indie titles.

With gog's recent push into that area of indie gaming, support for Mac / Linux / iOS / Android is more or less a must. It doesn't have to be supported at all (make it a separate section in the downloads, with a "provided as is"-disclaimer), but if a game has such multi-platform versions included in the official download from the developers, then they really ought to be provided.

I kinda regret buying this from gog now. Steam would have been smarter, or actually the official webpage given how it's the very same price (Steam is 9€ instead of 9$ for me).
Meh. Quite disappointed now. :(
At least it seems to work really well with Wine. I symlinked my Wine save directory to the one on my Windows partition. Pretty convenient. PCGamingWiki tells that the save files are cross-platform, so one should be able to do the same with the official Linux/Mac version.

Most of the games I buy on GOG are the older DOS games, which I end up running in DOSBox, under Linux, Android, or any of the other platform DOSBox supports. I have certainly bought newer non-DOSBox games, and applaud GOG's increasing catalogue of Indie games, and newer games.

Linux has pretty much been my everyday OS for years now, dual booting to Windows for games occasionally, although running in Linux natively is much more convenient. Much of the older non-DOS games will run fine under WINE, which is not bad, but in FTL's case, plus increasingly in other Indie games, there are native Mac and Linux versions from the developer.

I understand GOG may be reluctant supporting smaller markets, but at least offering the alternative Mac, Linux or even Android versions as unsupported "Extras" would seem to be an easy way to at least cover the bases as it were.

I bought the game on GOG, and it runs under WINE (so I don't have to reboot) because it looked interesting. Then I found out that I could have bought it from the developer directly and gotten all three versions. I don't fault GOG, but next time I'll be a little more cautious.
My main computer is PC, but I wish the Mac version too. If GOG is selling new games, must have the other OS versions.

I would bet they didn't understand what you mean. From the question, someone not aware of native Linux and Mac versions of FTL could think you just want to run the games on those platforms.

As the developer himsel offers multiplatform, it should be easy for GOG to upload the installers provided by the publisher to their site. They sell FTL tru humble store which also just gives out installer files. No client installer like steam or something there.

I was also fooled by GOG this time. I would have never brought it here if I had known that the other platfoms are not included. I just default to GOG when buying games, but this time, this was not a good choice.

@GOG: does anyone read this thread? Could you please comment?

Sounds about right, the way it was phrased. GOG games come with their own Windows installer, and it sounds like the tech response is centered around getting a Windows version with the GOG installer running under Linux/Mac, rather than just offering an extra download option of the developers own Linux/Mac versions without any emebelishment (or guarantee).

Along this line, I've often wished to be able to download the DOSBox games just as the DOS game itself, since I'll usually just use that to run the game under Linux (or even Android nowadays) under a seperate DOSBox installation. Of course I always grab and use GOG's DOSBox settings file for the game as well.

I can understand them not wanting to support more platforms, but offering extra downloads of the developer's own Linux/Mac versions, with no embellishments gaurantees still seems an easy way to at least cover their bases with virtually no extra expense.
I would also like to be able to download the Linux version to play on my lubuntu laptop.

Exactly this is a point. It is not so hard for them to provide linux versions ... question is why they don't do it?

* Internal policies
* Agreement with developers/owners of the specific game
* something else...

The thing is a lot of games on gog.com could easily work on linux., macos and maybe something else. A lot of indie games already have these versions. All dosbox games should work anywhere dosbox works....
There were rumors around yesterday that CD Project has a multiplatform "surprise" in the works.

I was thinking maybe this relates to the indie games stuff. Maybe we'll soon see all platforms supported.

Speaking of new operating systems, GOG will also be announcing that it is bringing the best PC games from throughout history to a new operating system.

I would recommend people that got "cheated" or "footed" buying GOG to post their experience here on FTL games GetSatisfaction also. I think the developer should do more to clarify to people what they buy - and what they DONT!

https://getsatisfaction.com/ftlgame/topics/no_steam_key_i_got_the_gog_version_and_hate_it_please_update_your_buy_page

I would trade in my non-drm gog version for a locked-down Steam version anyday, or the one from his own webpage, to get the multiplaform edition.

Edit: I got this reply from GOG support
Hello

Unfortunately we are unable to release Mac versions of our games, so the installer will only work on a Windows system.

If you wish to try playing a GOG.com release on a Mac, the best workaround would be to run the game on a Windows system installed and launched through Boot Camp. You could also try installing and running them on your system through some Virtual PC tool, like WINE, Parallels, Crossover Games or VMWare Fusion, though I can't guarantee that these will work and GOG cannot actually support such workarounds.

You could also check our forums for instructions on running many of our games on non-Windows platforms as well, since many of our customers are Mac/Linux users. Solutions for Linux users are likely to work with the OS X version of WINE.

Glad I supported the Kickstarter. Scored me a Steam key and GOG key that way.

mpartel: Does anyone know, has GOG told us why they've decided against providing these versions even as unsupported?

My guess is that they don't want to support any platform "partially". I imagine there might be good reasons for that, but I don't know them.
Yup, GOG has told us why. It's most unfortunate.

Oh, right, now I remember seeing that post. Unfortunate indeed. I can sort of understand their reasoning even though I don't agree with it.
For anybody who hasn't voted yet, make sure to vote for and Mac OS. Sooner or later GOG won't be able to say no to those requests anymore!
