Hello all, I'm having a problem getting Freespace 2 to install on my computer. I get an insufficient disk space error. Believe me, disk space isn't an issue here, as I've got around 3 TB available on 4 drives. The smallest of which still has 120 GB of free space available. I normally install my games to a dedicated drive, but in trying to fix the problem, I tried all of my drives. My rig is pretty high end, but it's not a performance issue, it simply won't install.

C2Q @ 4ghz
4GB Mushkin mem
eVGA 260 GTX FTW's in SLI
Vista 64
I'm a computer enthusiast, and as such, have tried all the usual tricks normally required to get software running in Vista. Not sure what I'm missing here... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

Hmmm. Not for me. I have tried to install it on both Vista and XP, on two different machines, and it won't install. I've downloaded twice.
Love to try to play Freespace 2. Frustrating to have purchased it and not be able to run it.

Did you download it with or without the downloader? Try both. Also, we need a little more detail if we're to help you. Are there error messages, crashes, broken installers, missing files or anything like that?
It would simply be alot easier to help you out if you actually told us what the problem was. Ever helped someone out with their PC? Don't you hate it when all you get is this:
"My PC don't work. Help me?"
"What's the problem?"
"It doesn't work..."
"Well, what doesn't work?"
"The PC..."
"..."

First, I'm downloading Freespace 2 for the third time. Let's hope it's a charm.
On Vista: Three installs on HP with 2 GB Ram, 256MB invidia graphics, pentium duo VISTA Ultimate produced what seemed to be a full install, but when I clicked on the icon, it would begin to load and then it would just stop, and do nothing. (I have suspended UAC on Vista.) I uninstalled and reinstalled and got the same results. I have uninstalled it and will try to install the new download I am getting right now.
My XP machine is simplier: 2.4Ghz Pentium 4 256 mb graphics. Now on this one, the full game seemed to install nicely, but I keep getting the error message, "this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." before the game is loaded.
I will install this new download and report back. Perhaps my previous downloads just weren't clean. I don't know. I downloaded Earth Worm Jim once and it worked on both machines swimmingly!

On Vista:
Trying out all the normal stuff first is usually a good idea.
1. Set compatibility mode to XP/98.
2. Try checking the "Run program as Admin" box.
3. Try activating the executable in the Freespace folder instead of just the desktop icon.
4. See what other hardware is running. Virus scanners and so on. Try disabling them to see if they can be interfering.
5. If Freespace has an out-of-game Setup utility (can't remember if it does) try tweaking graphics settings and such before starting it up.
On XP:
Pretty much the same as the above, except #2. Also, while the loading progresses on Vista, try doing a CTRL-Alt-Del to see processes and system performance. See if there's anything glaring out at you from there.
Possible but somewhat unlikely solution:
Undead Gremlins are possessing your PCs. Dancing naked around them while sprinkling Holy Water on them should work.

I redownloaded the freespace 2 file again, and seemed to have an easy install on my XP machine (file hd integrity). But when starting the game, I got the "this program has performed an illegal operation and must be closed. We're sorry for the inconvenience. DO you want to send a report to Microsoft?"
I hvae followed the advice given in this posting, no AVG, etc. but to no avail.

Tried running it from the executable in the folder instead of the desktop shortcut? Also, update all drivers on your xp machine. I seem to recall there being something of an initial setup utility running when starting FS2 the first time, and that could start a fist fight with your drivers.

Well, Deviate, you've been most kind to stick with this. First, it's a clean XP install. Very fresh. I'm wondering if this is an SP3 thing? Anyone out there install this on XP SP3? Perhaps if I change to SP2....
All drivers up to date. Just for yucks, I brought it to a friend's of mine and tried installing it on his Toshiba laptop, Pentium 4, 2gb memory, and got the same problem. It's so strange. I downloaded Earthworm Jim once and it runs on every machine I got.
I'll leave this go a bit. I have other games to play. And I'm looking for a request part of the website. Love to have Slave Zero and "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream" work on XP....

Well, since so many others have no problems (myself included) and yet your download doesn't work on two different XP machines and one Vista machine... Well, if we're looking at the common denominators it seems to be your download.
When you decide to give it another try, log on a friend's computer (on a completely different pipeline and different security setup, router/cable modem and so on) and download it there. It could be something between Gog.com and your own download 'puter corrupts the download.
To be perfectly honest, I'm running out of ideas. It's just strange that it should be this difficult, since so many have no problems at all...

Ok It's a good news bad news thing.
The bad news is I downloaded the thing on another computer and it still won't work. I officially give up on GOG games. Five downloads on three computers, two operating systems and two different internet links. Nothing. Life's too short people.
The good news is I got Freespace 2 installed and working on my XP machine. Hurrah!
The bad news is the install came from a game disk I bought in the bargain bin at a local store for $3. The game installed without a problem and I run it on a property compatibility mode. No Sweat. Bonus: they had a Fallout 2 disk in there as well. Installed that too, no property compatibility changes necessary.
So, to be honest, now I'm wondering what all the GOG fuss is about. See it from my point of view. I paid for a game with guaranteed XP compatibility, which, from the disks I have, doesn't need the guarantee in the first place. The original already works with the operating system. And one of my two downloads never worked.
I'm happy that other people have had different experiences.
