I'm just going to throw this out there, I wrote a fallout 3 modding guide that addresses the issues of broken combat, lack of weapons, lack of nutrition, the fact you can't keep playing after the story line, the low resolutions, the lack of any good quests at all in the entire game.......

I just finished reading the "just bugs me" section of TV Tropes on Fallout 3.
Such a long section for a recently released game!
Also, plenty of "explanations" that rely on things that have not been stated in any of the games or their manuals. This isn't bad in itself, but when gamers have to fill in the holes that bethesda didn't bother with it just feels wrong.

I'll be truthful, and I know this will stir up some commotion: Fallout 3 to me isn't even remotely good. I'd give it a "Fair" if I'm feeling very generous, otherwise it's mediocre.
Let's ignore comparisons with the previous 2 games first. The problem with this game is that it takes both the action and RPG genre 2 steps back. As an FPS, it fails to have a real kick in the combat. There's no thrill in the combat, and VATS only worsens the monotony of combat. As an RPG, the game's dialogue ranges from unrealistic to ultimate retardation, people saying things that don't make sense in any context at all; you don't feel like an alternate persona in the game because the only way you can seem to change the game world is to kill more things; you are either a hero or a bad guy; perks and leveling up only have the effect of "kewl lewt!" rather than any real effect in the game world...I can go on and on, but it feels like a post-apocalyptic Hellgate built on a solid graphics engine.
Then, you have the raging debate on the bastardization of a revered series...
On top of that, choices & consequences are strictly subjective. I killed the Sheriff in Megaton, and when I talk to the boy, he starts spouting random dialogue to me. I can't kill kids, what gives? The stupid Botox facial animations piss me off. The cheesy voice acting, lack of any serious emotions, is grating. The game also holds your hands - within 3 hours of the game, I have 50 stimpaks w00t.
The only credit I can give the game is the amazingly crafted post-apocalyptic landscape. That's about the only thing that lends a sense of believability to the game.

If you could kill children, American government would be all over that game. Theres simply no way it could be included in todays society.

although thats painfully repetitive and with some major flaws like cars that detonate if you piss on them. youd think after the nukes hit everything explosive would have exploded...

The media backlash won't be that bad if you don't actually encourage killing children. There are even mods that let you kill them. The problem with Bethesda's vision of Fallout is that they promote violence in the game by actually encouraging it. There's no moral dilemma that I felt in the game, as compared to FO2 when Horrigan kills the family.
Also, Bloody Mess was more of a sideline joke in FO1 and 2. Bethesda prioritises it above anything else. They might as well be doing a post apocalyptic GTA, sans hijacking cars.

I do think there was some moral issues, after I destroyed megaton, I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach.
Then again, that could be because I forgot to talk to Colin about "the middle age guy" and had no idea where to go from there.
Also, I think that the game deserves some respect for its soundtrack, Bioshock and FO3 have two of the best soundtracks I have ever heard.

I haven't yet played 3 so I won't pass judgement on its quality, however, my issue is that they changed it so much and still titled it Fallout 3. Had they labeled it as a series spin-off I'd have probably purchased it and quite enjoyed it by now, but the name would have me comparing it to 1&2 all the time.

I just started Fallout 3, with FOOK and XFO, so I don't really know what's part of the base game, and what's modded in. I can definitely see what people mean when they say it's a very busy and occupied world for a post-apocalyptic setting. Megaton also doesn't make much sense. First you think "who would build a city surrounding a bomb, especially so clustered around it?" Then you meet Mr. Burke and you have to say "WTF???? Why would anyone want to detonate a Nuke and blow up a city?" I also didn't like that Vampire cult...
Actually, that's both the quests I've done so far... 0/2 Bethesda...
I did see some visible consequence, which doesn't happen in many RPGs these days. But still, it was vvery lite. For example:
-Solving that vampire quest changed how people in Arefu acted toward me, they gave me free stuff, etc. Not much, but they reacted at least.
-Letting the Sheriff get killed by Mr. Burke changed the quest slightly, again an acknowledgement, but not a real consequence. No one in the bar cared at all, which is somewhat fitting I guess, but not really.
-Amata reacted when I told her I killed her dad, but I reloaded, so I don't know how much further that would go.
Overall, it's made small steps, which are actually really noticeable compared to oblivion, but it's still small.
I'm also noticing that Fallout's dialogue choices were much better. This one seems to have an extreme good and bad, and then a mercenary choice. Reminds me of KotOR.
Probably because of the mod, but I noticed more ways to get radiated, which was better than Fallout. I'll also admit I'm somewhat enjoying the combat. But it's too easy. I'll be turning up the difficulty next time I play. Though admittedly, I played Fallout 1/2 on the highest difficulty without much problem, but in Fallout 3 I didn't tag small guns, and I'm still owning people. Mod for rarer ammo is also a must. NPC markers was also dumb idea, esp. for enemies.
I'm bashing the game a lot, but I'm enjoying it actually. Not as Fallout or my some loose definition of RPG, but as... a stealth game I guess... but I already have 3 stealth boys, so I don't know how long that will last...

I think everyone's too blinded by nostalgia to see Fallout 3 as anything but "different."
The first thing I noticed when I saw Fallout New Vegas was that it's being developed by Obsidian, who have made decent but arguably disappointing sequels to two of another developer's franchises. Foreshadowing?

All Bethesda games have good soundtrack. Oblivion soundtrack is the most brilliant music I've heard in any game.

KOTOR 2 would have been great if they actually finished it. Shame.
