urherpesvirus3518: Fallout NV from GOG - might be identical to steam, but I only have the GOG version. I'll be honest and say this is my least favorite Fallout game because it seems so buggy. I have the current GOG version 1.4.0.525 (12010), which I think needs patching to make it playable in Windows 7 (x64). There might be modifications to fix the game I have not tried... However, I stopped playing because there are many places on the maps and points during various quests where the game is certain to crash every time. I spent more time trying to tweak the game to get it running than actually playing it. The Fallout 3 game (and the much different Fallout 4), however, almost never crashes on my PC when I play. I don't have the steam version of either game, fortunately.

streetyson: Firstly, they aren't identical because GOG's version comes LAA (large-address aware, aka 4GB patched) whereas last time I checked Steam's needs patching. But anyways... I have win7 x64 and both games (on a late core2duo PC, with a gt1030 card), and initially I had the same experience as you, BUT it isn't GOG's fault it's NV which was a rushed sequel and well known to be as glitchy and crash-happy as hell. HOWEVER, after following the YouTube video "Fallout New Vegas | FPS & Stability (definitive guide)" by gamerpoets, my NV is as smooth as silk. That guide was developed by and for the TTW supermod, but the fixes work for regular NV installations too. My only criticism of the vid is it tries to cover too many different ways of doing the fixes and pushes MO2 mod manager too much, but the manual methods are in there too and after re-watching and pausing it a few times I got through it all.
I didn't know about the LAA fix being applied to the GOG version, that's really good. It's obviously not something about the GOG version that makes it buggy and CTD all the time... it's the game itself. I'll check out the video next time I try to get the game working again.

Dabner: You should install some mods like :
https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/53635
https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/66537
https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/51664
By using some mods I can get past some crashes now!

I'd suggest anyone playing this game is basically required to install some game-fixing mods, or they can expect a frustrating game.

This is what I would suggest, at a minimum:

NVSE "script extender"
NVAC "anti-crash" (+ the process ghosting fix)
JIP LN NVSE Plugin
NVTF "tick fix"
YUP

Some of these mods have been updated in the last few months, so the updated version would be worth trying for anyone who already has it.

Installing these wasn't enough because the first time I ran the game to try and recreate the crash that I was having for the That Lucky Old Sun side quest, it still crashed. Reverting to a saved game slightly before starting the entire quest wasn't enough. What worked for me was to wait until after it was already 9am to repair the generator and set the power grid, then go flip the switch. Now that I modded the game, doing that works no matter what my choices are for the quest. However, a crash can still be reliably reproduced where the game freezes at 9am when waiting by the console... if Python repaired the power and then the grid was configured before 9am.

mowiegand: I already own Fallout 3 on both Steam and GoG. I had it on Steam first and then bought it on GoG because of all the improvements that came with it (removed GFWL, among others). I am now contemplating doing the same with NV, but I am not sure if GoG has done anything to address all the stutter/stability issues NV had. Does anybody have any experience that could help out?

Even with mods that apparently fix the crashes and the stutter, the game remains very unstable.
Thanks in advance for your help!
I strongly suggest getting the GOG version! This version is really worth a lot more than the Steam version since it's DRM-free. I can confirm that what others have said is true: the game comes with a LAA fix applied. I was able to get rid of any trace of stutter with mods but my game runs at fps that is too high unless I limit the game to half refresh rate adaptive vsync (like Fallout 3). I think there are still stability issues because of the original source game code never being fixed/patched by the makers of the game.

EDIT: Still no game crashes for me with the mods/fixes mentioned above, and I've played 10+ hours since this post.
