urherpesvirus3518: Fallout NV from GOG - might be identical to steam, but I only have the GOG version. I'll be honest and say this is my least favorite Fallout game because it seems so buggy. I have the current GOG version 1.4.0.525 (12010), which I think needs patching to make it playable in Windows 7 (x64). There might be modifications to fix the game I have not tried... However, I stopped playing because there are many places on the maps and points during various quests where the game is certain to crash every time. I spent more time trying to tweak the game to get it running than actually playing it. The Fallout 3 game (and the much different Fallout 4), however, almost never crashes on my PC when I play. I don't have the steam version of either game, fortunately.
Dabner: You should install some mods like :
https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/53635 https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/66537 https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/51664 By using some mods I can get past some crashes now!
I'd suggest anyone playing this game is basically required to install some game-fixing mods, or they can expect a frustrating game.
This is what I would suggest, at a minimum:
NVSE "script extender"
NVAC "anti-crash" (+ the process ghosting fix)
JIP LN NVSE Plugin
NVTF "tick fix"
YUP
Some of these mods have been updated in the last few months, so the updated version would be worth trying for anyone who already has it.
Installing these wasn't enough because the first time I ran the game to try and recreate the crash that I was having for the That Lucky Old Sun side quest, it still crashed. Reverting to a saved game slightly before starting the entire quest wasn't enough. What worked for me was to wait until after it was already 9am to repair the generator and set the power grid, then go flip the switch. Now that I modded the game, doing that works no matter what my choices are for the quest. However, a crash can still be reliably reproduced where the game freezes at 9am when waiting by the console... if Python repaired the power and then the grid was configured before 9am.
