It definitely does not work well for me and many others in Wine :(

Personally I tried installing it with Wineskin in OS X. Game is VERY slow. At first I thought it was just the mouse like noted in this bug dated 4 years back (http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6033) that still hasn't been fixed. Basically mouse is erratic on the playing field but fine in menus.

I then tried installing it in VMWare Fusion 3 under Windows 7 x64. Same exact problem. I thought that's definitely weird. So it isn't Wine specific. I tried it on my work computer which has Windows XP, and wow!! The difference is immediate. The game plays so much better and smoother, not just the mouse. So I installed XP in Boot Camp and now the game runs great.

I believe people here who said their mouse is fine do not know about this bug. It's the kind of thing you don't notice until you know about it, you would think it's just normal, maybe the game is just like that. But I went to WineHQ to see install tips for Fallout and noticed the bug and sure enough, it's very irritating.

Actually, I did notice it at first, but after a) upping the mouse sensitivity in the game and b) setting a few registry entries according to this post, That annoyance has completely disappeared for me. Note, however, that I didn't set the registry entries for the app specifically, rather for my Wine instance as a whole.

And don't take everything on the WineHQ as gospel. For years the Civ IV entry listed the fact that you couldn't see the city production/growth info as a bug, when in fact it was a setting that people had not enabled in-game.

Cool. I'm running this on a Win7 machine now, but my laptop is Ubuntu and this is good to know.

I had some issues with Fallout1 and Wineskin on the Mac, but rolling back a few versions of Wine did the trick. The version that worked for me was:

Wineskin 2.4 with Engine WS7Wine1.3.24, no need for any modifications.

I have somewhat less success after applying the 1.2.1 semi-official patch, the 1.3.5 un-official patch and the 3.02 HiRes patch.

I am running wine 1.2.3 and ubuntu 10.04.4 Lucid.
Apparently i can install it without problem. but when i try to play it, the window is just all black and some seconds later it crashes. alt+tabbing reveals an error message, but cant get to read it. it says something about an application error with the .exe file. reinstalling does nothing. would anyone happen to have any good advice on how to fix this?

Actually old games, like Fallout 2 usually do run under Linux waaay better than on Windows, at least this is my experience. I had absolutely no problem with running Fallout 2 on Linux, and I hear a lot of "black screen, audio present, but no video" errors on XP.

Old topic, but I thought I'd throw in a tip for Fallout Tactics in Linux:

If it gives you a black screen, try turning off the Window manager. Of all the solutions I tried, that was the one that fixed the problem.

EDIT: And at first I couldn't get Fallout 2 to work, it wouldn't even start. Just renamed the executable to F2.exe and it started working. Fallout 1 seems to work right out of the box.

Im a mac user, so Im not quiet sure how relevant my problem is to this thread. But anyway

I downloaded and installed Fallout from GOG games, and I ran the program and played. Later when I tried to open up the game again, the game never opened. I have been googling and I checked the content of the fallout.app and I checked out the Wineskin app. I ran a test run on the fallout application and i get the following error message

I have checked if it was a permission problem ( I right clicked - Get info and checked "Read & write") but I still wont work. The game worked about two times, then suddenly it wont. Hope someone in here can help me :)

I think I fixed it, and Ill post it here for future references if someone should end in the same situation :)

I went back into the file (right click show content) and opened wineskin. Then Advanced - Tools - config utility (winecfg) - Under "Applications" i clicked Add application.. and went into the GOG Games folder and found the fallout.exe file.
And the application have worked for now.
