antibonk: Yea, it has the disk check SecuRom, but the funny thing is. It is only attached to the launcher exe file. So, you can just run the game exe instead and it bypasses it. Don't need the dvd unless you need to change some of the settings in the launcher.
I do wish they would have just gone with there own in house cd-check program, instead of using SecuRom.
That would be too simple a solution, and someone at Bethsoft decided they >had< to spend money on some form of DRM, though they tried to say it's not really DRM.
These companies think that because of the pirating they need to protect their product, but the end result is (I witnessed this first-hand) the pirates STILL get the DRM-removed version either before launch or within a day or two after.
How did I witness this? I checked a torrent site for FO3 downloads around time of launch. Yep, it was up, 3k people were downloading it, and it had no DRM. And this was one site. Another site someone else checked had 12k people downloading FO3.
DRM does not stop pirates, it aggravates legitimate users and creates pirates (from what I've heard from friends and on the net). Anyway who knows why these companies don't just use the in-house cd check? They'd probably collectively save millions in licensing fees, and the end-result would be better games because they'd have a bigger budget.
Whether you're pro or anti torrent, I think it's naive to assume that DRM stops any pirating at all.
NOTE: The Direct2Drive version has an online activation procedure, but I have no clue if it's securom or not. All I know is I wrote down my activation code since it has a manual activation option.
If it's not securom then D2D is another viable option, but I have a feeling it is...
