I sometimes get the same bug as Bodyless does - but with vanilla Fallout.
Also, I can't seem to see any videos or character portraits. It worked in the Gametap version of Fallout 1 on the same computer.

well this is probably an issue with the game tap version being unpatched or a previous version, try using some of the patches, or some of the recommended solutions in other threads here. :D

Sorry, but what does vanilla Fallout mean?

Summit: Sorry, but what does vanilla Fallout mean?

It means that no mods are used, it's a "pure" game.
A, thanks. I've come across that expresion few times and been wondering what it means ever since
Now I feel like an ass. I must have re-installed an abandonware version I found earlier instead of the GOG version. Fallout was my first GOG purchase, so I had no idea how the file looked like in my stuffed 'downloads' map. :$
I have no complaints about the GOG version, though. Video works fine and no black screens yet.
bump for the sake of bumping.
Great info Paul!
Thanks a lot :)

Weclock: Q.Fallout is slow, Jittery, or otherwise graphically impairing..
A.Try renaming ddraw.dll, as this fixes most graphical issues.

Hi! Thank you for this FAQ. Fallout is certainly slow and jittery for me, I was wondering what you rename the file you mentioned to?
Thank you,
Nel

doesn't matter, renaming it means that the game won't be able to find it in it's parent directory, so it will look to use the default windows one.

I see, so just rename it to anything?
Again thank you! :)

Paul_cz: Ok, after two hours of reading websites and readmes I finally installed The Ultimate Version of Fallout .
The procedure goes as following:
1) Install Fallout 1 from GOG.com
2) Find and install "Fallout_1_TeamX_Patch_ENG_1.2w" (either via nma or just google)
3) Install "f1child_patch" (again, nma)
4) Install "fallup13" - this is the TeamX patch 1.3.4 (nma)
5) Install "f1npcmod" from TeamX (again, nma)
6) Install "sfall1" (from http://timeslip.chorrol.com/sfall.html)
7) Install "Fallout1_High_Resolution_Patch_v1.3" (nma)
8) Open f1_res and set AUTO_SCRN_SIZE = 0, then your desired resolution (I use 800*600, anything above is just too darn small for my taste), then if you want, change the way ingame movies work, either fullscreen or not....up to you.Same with movie subtitles.
Run the game and enjoy it in all of its patched glory, WITH KILLABLE KIDS (not that I ever kill them, but the option is here), with better NPC interaction (armors, levelling..), with tweaks like mousewheel in the inventory etc, in higher resolution...
The Ultimate Fallout Experience awaits.

This looks and plays really well for me too! Thank you for sharing this!
(The only slight issue I get is with the screen blackouts, very minor issue, but I find that if you just move the in-game cursor to the edge of the screen, it instantly clears up the playing area. It only leaves the interface bar thing clouded over.)
The resolution patch is great and with the children patch, the towns seem much more vibrant and alive.
Glad it is working for you.
Regarding the blackout bug - are you 100% sure that you do not have any program running in the background, like ICQ or QIP or RapGet or Skype or something?
Because I never had a blackout, then I started downloading something via RapGet and started playing Fallout, and everytime a file downloaded I got a blackout. So it was caused by it taking over in the background. After I disabled it, I NEVER had a blackout bug again with my configuration.
anymore info on that black out?
