The following video demonstrates how sunlight appears and disappears (as visible by how illuminated one big part of a huge asteroid is) - depending on player distance from it. The video demonstrates the bug in all 4 graphical presets, including "Epic".

I understand this is because shadows are calculated only in a certain radius, and it's probably not possible to increase that radius to cover whole map even on Epic preset. But for large immobile objects like such ateroids, big wrecks, space stations, etc - perhaps static, pre-rendered shadow maps or somesuch could be done?

P.S. If this is "Working as Intended" - still, seeing such a dramatic change in illumination for such big objects would surely feel "wrong" to people...
Shadows are precomputed for different levels of detail. This Process is seperate from the actual level editing and done automatically on our servers. I am not an expert on light mapping but I think that either the lightmaps are outdated (in comparison to the level geometry), or that on the lowest level of detail the asteriods in front are simplified to not being existend.

Do you recall in which location you've encountered this? Would be helpful for double checking. Or was this a general report?

Best regards

It was some kind of procedurally generated location, but i don't remember which particular sort of. I only encountered this once. However, usually i don't pay attention to it - but in this case, i was trying different distances / angles in photo mode and thus noticed it.

Also, once again - it's not just "lowest level of detail". All four presets, including "Epic", have this bug - you can see me using all four in the video.
