I'd agree that the lack of a "middle ground" set of levels is a problem.
Whoever created those levels (it's not the original EG's developer) must be some kind of freaked out masochist.
Hinterlands 8; it's like the designer was
intentionally trying to make the player rage-quit. Word of warning if you get there: there's an invisible trap-door in the final corridor when it otherwise appears that you're home free.
The goat just isn't made to go throught this non-puzzle-only-reaction-test hell of a game.
It's not completely without puzzle elements... they're just overshadowed by the sheer difficulty required in the execution.
