DK-Gold originally included a game editor. Is that in this one? All I see is DK and DK-Deeper Dungeons. I'm hoping that it does and I just am missing something. Ideas? Feedback?

The official editor is not included with GoG's version. I believe, if you have it or can find it download somewhere, that you can manually install it and it'll work.

That's what I did with the official editor and my disc version to begin with - manually installed it by copying the files over from the disc. My DKGold disc didn't have an auto-installer for the editor, just instructions on how to do it manually. :)

No, it's not included, but I've found a way to get Bullfrog's original Map Editor running.
The only downside is, that it runs to fast on modern machines. You either have to live with the speed up (e.g. sprinting tool tips) or slowing it down somehow (e.g. with 3rd party software like Mo'Slo).

What you need:
A. GOG version of Dungeon Keeper 1 (obviously ;-)
B. Original Bullfrog Map Editor (dkedit.zip)
Unfortunately Electronic Arts "cleaned" its FTP server, hence the original download from Bullfrog is gone. Here are some alternative sources:
- http://afswww.icequake.net/pc/games/dungeon_keeper_ii/mirror/keeper/downloads/dkedit.zip
- http://www.gamefront.com/files/11628177
C. Decompression software like WinRAR or 7zip
D. Dungeon Keeper 1 Demo
- http://www.moddb.com/games/dungeon-keeper/downloads/dungeon-keeper-demo
- http://keeperklan.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=4
- http://download.cnet.com/Dungeon-Keeper-demo/3000-2119_4-10011780.html

How-to:
1. Install Dungeon Keeper and don't use the KeeperFX patch as the Original Map Editor won't work with those files
2. Getting the editor files
- The editor installer (dkedit.exe) doesn't work with the GOG version, hence you have to extract the editor files manually
- You can extract the files from dkedit.exe with WinRAR (editor.exe, Data folder, Levels folder etc.)
- If you extract the .exe-file with 7zip, you'll get a file named _cabinet, among others. You can open this _cabinet with 7zip and inside you'll find the files and folders of the map editor. Extract all of them.
3. Copy all the files and folders of the editor directly into the GOG's Dungeon Keeper directory (usually "\Dungeon Keeper Gold"). editor.exe and keeper.exe should now be in the same folder.
4. The editor needs some DLLs to run, that are missing in GOG's version
- Extract the Dungeon Keeper Demo and run the SETUP.BAT
- This will extract all demo files
- Now copy MSS32.DLL, SMACKW32.DLL and WSND7R.DLL into GOG's Dungeon Keeper folder (so that they are in the same folder as editor.exe).
5. Edit KEEPER.CFG in your game's directory
- Open the file with a text editor, e.g. Wordpad or Editor
- Fill in the game's path at INSTALL_PATH= (e.g. INSTALL_PATH=C:\Gog-Games\Dungeon Keeper Gold)
6. Done. Run the editor.

If you run into problems, try running the editor as Administrator and also in Compatibility Mode for the oldest Windows available (the program was designed for Win95).

Note that there are other map editors :

I got the editor working by following these instructions, however I can't delete creatures. You should be able to remove them by right-clicking but it's doing nothing.

Be sure to actually be in creature placement mode, so only if left mouse button places a creature will right mouse button delete a creature.

I was hoping it was with it. I couldn't get it working when I had the game back then. Please bring it back ?
i tried this, and the editor does work now.

however, everytime i want to play the game, i need to change the keeper.cfg again.

if i want to use editor i need to use the proper install path of the game,

but if i want to play, i need to change the install path back to c:\

probably because dosbox gets told the game is in c:\ , and editor is a windows app and needs the proper install path.

i have no problems wiith this, bu i thought it worth mentioning ;)

I'd like to add alternative instructions that do not require the demo.

Prerequisites:
- GoG Dungeon Keeper Gold
- KeeperFX
- The original map editor (dkedit.zip) (I found mine from the KeeperFX site, under DK1 tools)

1. Install Dungeon Keeper Gold.
2. Install KeeperFX (to different folder).
4. Extract dkedit.zip to somewhere.
3. Open the extracted dkedit.exe with a file archive tool like the free 7-zip (google it).
4. Open _cabinet, and extract everything into your Dungeon Keeper Gold installation folder.
5. Edit KEEPER.CFG. INSTALL_PATH should point into the Dungeon Keeper Gold folder. E.g. D:/games/Dungeon Keeper Gold.
6. Move MSS32.DLL, SMACKW32.DLL and WSND7R.DLL from KeeperFX folder into your Dungeon Keeper Gold folder.

Start the editor and enjoy.
The most powerful editor for dk1, adikted, is text-based so it takes getting used-to.

If for some reason you use another editor, including the official one, you should open the map with the text editor afterwards because it's the only one that can generate bug-free textures for the terrain and precise location & attribute data for objects.

Be careful about saving campaign maps with the other editors because they can lose information.

Could you explain how the original editor breaks the levels? I've already done +20 working levels with it, but if there's some breaking feature I should avoid, I'd like to know it.

I'm avoiding adikted mostly because it is far less fun to work with and I find it important to see how the lighting is working for my level to set a proper mood.

the editor is windows only i believe. you could try to convince the developer of dungeon keeper fx to fix it. another alternative is to get gog to port it to dos so that it can be included with their version.
