Am I wrong or does the group constantly fight enemies that are of higher level?
I don't mind, I'll crush the enemies eventually, I'm curious to find out if I missed something out.
[Minor Spoilyspoilers]
In Luculla Forest I ran into to this massive spider queen that melted Jahan into something rather gooey with her poisonous attack in one hit. She was 5 levels higher.
I avoided her with the next reload and found invincible skeletons in the Tenebrium mines.
Then I took my chances with Loic and he was doable but still 3 levels higher than my group.
I finshed every side quest in Cyseal but I think I'm levelling far too slow.
Not that's it's a problem per se, I just find it very odd and unusual for a RPG to constantly fight against higher level opponents as I'm used to the exact opposite.

I don't know what RPGs you're used to, but it's not unusual in the slightest: start a new game of Baldur's Gate and travel to the farmlands while you're still level 1. You won't survive. D:OS is not an RPG where enemies scale with you. There is no discrepancy.
Finish the "witch" questline first before exploring Luculla forest. Most of that place is not for a low-level party.

After finishing that questline, I was high enough level to laugh at the face of most enemies in Luculla, including the spider queen, who was rather easy :)

Under invincible skeletons, you mean deathknights? They really *are* invincible, at first you will have to sneak past them, and you will learn a skill that can kill them later in the story. But first, you should go for the witch.

You brought back some unpleasant memories from my first BG playthroughs....... >_<

I can't finish the Witch questline because my characters have absolutely no clue what to do about the barrier, they answered the riddle of the fungus but it will lead them to a dead end. The map in Luculla Forest is horrible linear, you have just one path (at least that's what I found)
and while in almost any old school rpg you could grind for xp, the only thing I can do is butcher the entire town of Silverglen and later Cyseal for XP. And there a lot of counter examples where Scaling is not present but you have always areas where the enemies are below your level, though I can't find them...

I'm just terribly short on XP, my Items are fine, my spells are fine. I'm rich with more than 150000 pieces of gold,I have found a lot of Star- and Bloodstones but I am terrible short of XP.

Right now I'm stuck in small chamber with some girl's blood and her litany of diaries surrounded by Void Demons, Fire Demons and some obnoxious priest of the cult all 4 levels higher than me...
I can manage that fight, probably, but it isn't fun. The Blood rain isn't fun. The combat isn't satisfying this way. Since I got the blood vial I could teleport out. Or make everyone invisible and sneak out but why?
I could finance my private mercenary army by now that would act as meat shields but there is no option for that. And while the Demons are most likely summoned (Demons tend to live on another plane of existence) I presume the "destroy summon" spell doesn't work on them.

Let me give you a hint about the barrier:
You can remove it two ways. Try asking the imp (violent), or search Luculla for a (well-hidden...) paper hidden by a wizard, who likes traps (non-violent).

The encounter you talk about is the very same encounter that can be found on D:OS's tvtrope page.(not exact quote) "Technically you can make it to the vial of blood without freeing the witch, but the boss will mop the floor with you, because of the exp you missed."

Zixzaxx? That's a good idea... Thanks for the tip.

But thanks to the almighty doorway of carnage I was able to butcher the boss and his nuisance of demon entourage. Can a meatless Skeleton be a meatshield? I guess so. He held the chokepoint better than all of the 300 Spartans would have done, until I butchered one demon at the time, while that idiot of cultist slipped on the icy remains of the ice elemental he destroyed.
But while he dropped a lot of loot still no new xp level for my characters...

Don't worry, freeing the witch+exploring the surrounding area will definetly boost up your level ;)

And gratz on killing them O.O
They kicked my butt in a few turns, when I made itt there too early. But I didn't use summons. I never summon in any RPG... idk why, just not my style :D

Khadgar42: I'm just terribly short on XP,
Going on what you've written so far, you seem to be relying on killing things for XP. That simply won't happen in this game. It just won't. Brains, not brawn: do quests and side quests.
Thank you MadyNora. But it feels a bit like an exploit. They were clearly superior forces, I just used the almighty doorway to keep my group out of harms way.

I always use summons, the more units on the battlefield the better. If they are expendable like summons they are perfect. Exactly my playstyle...

Well Hickory, that's a good point, but I can't figure out any more quests. Besides: Quests and exploration give me about 2000 XP while killing one of those Demons gave me over 5000...

If you have a lot of bloodstones stored up, you might want to use some of them. Each one grants exploration EXP that increases as your level rises (assuming you didn't already figure this out).

Good point. I have two blood stones left. But as I used one to heal Alfie I think I need them to heal other NPCs as well. Right now, I have them because I can't handle Tenebrium yet and they are my only way of healing it.

[***Minor spoiler***]

Talk to Brandon in Silverglen.
If you haven't followed up on the Witch quest then you're missing out on a (large) subsection - Hiberheim - that is good for at least a couple of levels; Luculla is doable without that but it's much more difficult. You may be able to gain a level or so by roaming the wilderness areas and avoiding the really nasty enemies like the Spider Queen.

Summons and chokepoints are definitely a good strategy when facing strong forces, although it's not foolproof - some creatures have ways around it.

Yes, I see that now.
I wasn't expecting that the White Witch's cabin was so "large"...

Finally someone lower than my level waiting to get stomped...
Hello,
I did not read everything but 5 levels you mention in the beginning is really too much.

I was myself crushed by a level 13 party at level 10.

If you meet too high level ennemies, you should backtrack and explore elsewhere and try other quests.
Sometimes you do not get a quest directly, but digging a hole leads to undergrounds to explore.

In my case, I went elsewhere and could continue the adventure, meeting ennemies that matches my power and get some level ups.

I know I will crush the other level 13 party when I will be back there.
