Dear god, I am loving this game!
A little background. I hadn't heard of the Divinity series before seeing Angry Joe's hilarious and positive review of Divinity: Dragon Commander. Didn't take me too much longer after that to look up the series here on GOG and pick up the series. I (unfortunately) didn't hear about Divinity: Original Sin until just after the Kickstarter had closed. But what I'd seen of it at the time strongly reminded me of Neverwinter Nights. Okay, so fast forward to a couple months ago and I watched some of the gameplay videos. I amended that to NWN meets Fallout-style combat.
I knew people were already playing some of the game due to Steam Early Access. But I knew GOG would get the game so I held out. Anticipation was running high for me as the game was released on Steam, but delayed here. Day of release on GOG I bought it.
Can't say I'm disappointed. The game has an insane level of interaction with the environment. I'm constantly finding new ways to get my characters out of (or in to) jams and scrapes. My wizard destroyed a water barrel in Cyseal. Now, I'd been merrily smashing barrels and crates all over town with no problem, but for some reason the guard took exception to this. I was attacked by said guard, two nearby civilians and the two bulls tethered to nearby carts. That part surprised me.
While I was able to deal some decent damage to the guard by luring him into the water and electrifying it, the bulls destroyed me. Good times! =)
I've gone around the town searching for more quests and items. I talked to the guy outside the Inn and joined their quest guild (totally smacks of a pyramid scheme - I may regret this, heh), talked to a healer with an unusual healing stone, raided the mayor's library and caused a bit of a ruckus around town. I'm playing a male ranger and a female wizard. Only level 2 at the moment, and just getting ready to leave Cyseal to investigate the undead problem. It is a little difficult playing two ranged fighters as my mains, but I'm holding my own so far. I did find a person in the library willing to join and he's a decent fighter, so I now have a frontline warrior to help draw the enemy away from the two mains.
And patches are frequent and quick to get to GOG (usually within 24 hours of showing up on Steam). Just noticed a new patch today, in fact.
In all, the game has exceeded my expectations. One of the few games I'd been anticipating this year, and so far the only game released recently where I really want to see what's next and what new combination of skills I can put together to do neat things. Great job, Larian!
