With the announcement of Diablo II Resurrected today at Blizzcon, do we think we might see the original Diablo II and LOD here soon?

What do you guys think?
I'd buy it here if Blizz decides to release it here. I doubt it would happen, though.
Diablo 2 works just fine on modern computers though. You can buy it at battle.net

Not a chance, at all.

There will no longer be a "original Diablo Ⅱ" but only one single version (like for StarCraft or Warcraft 3) with the new graphics locked behind some DRM. And of course, all of this will require the Blizzard client.

Sad, but true :(
That trailer looks awesome.
Maybe not at the time when this officially releases, but some time (years?) further down the road?

The remaster allows quick swapping between the overhauled 3D PBR-based and the original sprite-based version at any time and I can't see Blizzard maintaining support for both the stand-alone Legacy version and the remaster (with the built-in Legacy version) forever.

They won’t support the current classic version, only the remaster including a classic mode.

If you already own the current version of the game, keep backups, because as soon as the remaster is out it will become the only legit version ;)

(I thankfully have backups of my trusty DRM-free 1.13d Diablo Ⅱ)

I wonder if I am the only one who is not hyped by this remaster *at all*.

I could have tried it if it were a free update, or a 5$ paid update for owners of the base game. Assuming there were a DRM-free version. Something that Blizzard will never allow…

The classic game still renders very good on my main gaming screen (1280×1024 native resolution, so quite appropriate to display 4:3 / 5:4 games), and still is a real blast to play ;) So there is no way I would put money on a DRM-ridden version of the same game… (especially as I already bought a couple copies of the classic one)

I'm very excited about the remaster and already pre purchased it. I'm not discussing the merits of the remaster at all, merely whether you all think we'll ever see og Diablo 2 here now that there's no reason for Blizzard to continue to keep it locked behind battle net to purchase legit keys and download from.

This I do not understand. All previous Blizzard remasters are tied to their mandatory client.
Actually the only game they still sell that is not tied to this client yet is Diablo Ⅱ. And you can expect that to change with the incoming remaster.

The only Blizzard games we got here on GOG are the ones they abandoned a long time ago.

Pretty simple, actually. The only legitimate place to buy Diablo 2 these days that's still "in print" is through Battle.net/Blizzard Store.

Threads like these are good for optics. The game developers have people who read forums regularly to get a pulse for what is wanted and what isn't. The fact that Diablo 2 has very little traction on GOG's Diablo forums shows me it probably won't come here, mostly because there's an underwhelming amount of interest. Look at how few replies this thread has generated.

One more final thing: I see OG WC3 was removed from Blizzard's eshop. Shame.

I was able to use the CD codes for my Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction CDs on a blizzard launcher or website to download the latest version of Diablo 2 a year and a half ago. It was very impressive that they still supported those old games. The game also played without problems. No psychedelic colors and alt-tabing works fine. I'm using Windows 7 though. The experience could be different on Windows 10.

It has been removed from sale a couple years ago already, they only keep selling the Reforged version ;)
This is one of the reasons I’m not enthusiastic at all about the incoming Diablo Ⅱ remaster.
It has already been confirmed that both Diablo II LoD and Diablo II Resurrected will be sold as different products. D2R is not going to substitute original D2 at all.

Furthermore, they also said during this Blizzcon that players will be able to execute the game without logging in with their Battlenet account. Hell, they even are going to maintain multiplayer through TCP/IP conection.

Citation needed.

If true this would go completely against what they had said during the 45min panel discussion of the remaster:

"Now, we do still allow you to play offline, right? You will need to authenticate that your copy is legit, but after that you won't be bothered."

Still unclear if they meant an actual one-time authentification check (during purchase or when downloading the installation package) or a one-time authentification check per session (as in every time you start up the game).
Knowing Blizzard it's probably the latter.

There you have what I found yesterday about the matter. Seems like MrLlamaSc asked more questions in private. Your doubts about the way they are going to authenticate the copy (just once or each time you execute singleplayer) is legit though:

As for the TCP/IP connection goes...
