I had been running this game just fine on Linux Mint 21 Vanessa, until updating to the latest patch, now it consistently freezes after just a few seconds of gameplay .

My system specs are as follows :

Linux Mint 21 Vanessa
AMD Ryzen 5 2600
Nvidia GTX 1660ti
16gb ram

I'm running the game via Heroic game launcher.

After doing a little bit of research this seems to be a common problem among Linux users and I haven't found any potential fixes yet, so I was wondering if it might be possible to roll back to a previous version.

I have the installer for 1.6 and rolling back would be a fairly simple affair on Windows but I'm not sure how I would go about this on Linux as I'm still fairly new to the OS, are there any Linux users out there who could advise me on this ?

Hi, i allready wrote to support team.
But they said "Linux is not a supported platform"

Glitch appears after 1.62 or higher.

For CDPR support team here is YT link what shows that bug:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZWcGwm9Z2E
TBH I wasn't really expecting much from CDPR, I was rather hoping someone might have found a workaround or something.

anyway I can confirm that the issue still persists in patch 1.63.
On the plus side I figured out how to install version 1.6 via Heroic games launcher, it was a fairly simple process and the game seems to be running just fine now.

The only downside is that I lost all of my saves, luckily I wasn't too far into my most recent playthrough.
I have the same problem. I have tried multiple versions of wine and proton, Nothing seems to work.
I can live with wine/proton not being a supported platform, but what really annoys me is that I can not even downgrade it now using offline installers of any kind (well, there is a way, but explaining it is probably against ToS - Way yo go GOG, providing a worse service to the paying customer... --facepalm--)

BTW, a lot of people that care about DRM Free care about Linux as well.
You can try downgrading to 1.61. that should work for you. but no phantom liberty for us.

If you have steam version. Use Proton experimental, bleeding edge beta.
If you play through lutris use lutris-ge-proton8-8.

If you want to get help how to downgrade you can DM me on discord: xx_dahippo1555_xx

Yes, I came here to find a solution.

It says they support Steam Deck, so I would assume this includes Linux.

I was going to get back into the game for Phantom Liberty. Shame, I had no issues with 1.61 but that means no phantom liberty and thus no reason to get back into the game (already did two completionist runs)

I am wondering why are both of you saying we will not be able to run Phantom Liberty? If it works in windows 11, it can be run (in principle) in Linux / Wine/Proton.

AFAICT, the issue is an incompatibility between these 3 things:
1) The GPU driver stack (any driver with Vulkan support should do)
2) The Wine/Proton APIs
3) The game itself

Is there anything preventing any actor from fixing this in an upcoming build of any of those 3?
GOG Galaxy does not let me downgrade past 1.62, so I had to dig a bit to source the version.
I have tested 1.61 and it works fine with proton v8.0 with no issues s far.
I have tried Heroic launcher, but idk why it would not work launching any game. could be that I am using firejail extensively.

I think this might be NVIDIA specific, as SteamDeck does not seem to have this issue. I do have the latest stable linux driver. Hope they can forward fix this.

It isn't 1 or 2, its in the game because it hangs and crashes.
If it was wine it wouldn't create a crash .DMP, and GPU it would cause instability and a kernel panic.

Regardless, why would this mean that Phantom Liberty will not work? The DLC will run on top of 1.7, right?
I am not aware of any plan to specifically make it not work on Linux. As mentioned, 1.63 already works on the SteamDeck, which is Linux + AMD + Proton
From what I can gather this problem seems to be specific to Nvidia cards, it would be interesting to know if anyone with a Nvidia card is able to run the game on Linux .

One thing that confuses me is that sometimes the game will run for a couple of minutes before freezing and other times it will freeze almost instantly.

Whatever the issue is I hope it's resolved before Phantom Liberty is released.
+1 for not working.

I am using Linux mint + Lutris on a nvidia card - I have a steamdeck which runs it without hassle on lutris. The big difference being nvidia card as what flavor of linux has little bearing on a wine setup. I suspect some change on CDPR's side has inadvertently broken nvidia compatibility on linux.

While I am able to both play with the Windows (few holdouts left before I go full mint) partition as well as the deck, I would imagine a platform that doesn't value DRM would also provide at least minimal support an otherwise free ecosystem - if it means something as simple as providing 1 older version (1.61).

if someone with a AMD and NVIDIA card available to swap around could test the default Lutris install/config it would help to confirm it being NVIDIA change specific - regardless of actual in-game performance - it crashes and dies prior to showing anything now (black screen).
Well that saves me $30 on an expansion cause I am not going back to Windows.
I've just been looking through Proton DB and some people are reporting that the game works with Nvidia cards, however the reports I've seen fail to mention which version of the game they are using so it might be a bit of a long shot but here is a list of launcher setting etc. that might be worth a try:

Proton 7.0-6

GPU : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
Driver Version : NVIDIA 535.54.03

Launcher Settings :

VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_2 gamemoderun mangohud %command% --launcher-skip -skipStartScreen

Proton 8.0-2

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU
Driver Version : NVIDIA 530.41.03

Launcher Settings :
PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11,dxr VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_2 %command% --launcher-skip

GE-Proton8-4

GPU : NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070
Driver Version : NVIDIA 530.41.03

Launcher Settings :
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11 MANGOHUD=1 OBS_VKCAPTURE=1 gamemoderun %command% --intro-skip --launcher-skip --skipStartScreen

Proton Experimental

GPU : NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER
Driver Version : NVIDIA 535.54.03

Launcher Settings :
PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11,dxr VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_2 %command% --launcher-skip --intro-skip -skipStartScreen

All of these reports are from the last 3 weeks so there's a chance that something here might work if you have 1.62 or later installed.

If you do manage to stop the freezes please let us know.
