Hi!,

Across all three games, which do you prefer?

In BG1 I find that grandmastery is incredibly powerful. You can cut down almost anything in one hit. In Bg2 & ToB it looks like spreading out your weapon proficiencies would be better, since there are more monsters; meaning you'll have to put more consideration into whether to use blunt, piercing, or slashing weapons. I'm not saying that kind of strategy doesn't exist in BG1 - it's just more prominent in BG2 + ToB.

Like I mentioned above, BG2 & ToB have more monster types, but in addition to that there are more weapons, weapon types (like ninjatas and katanas), and different kinds of effects and enchantments.
Mastery in all three games. Mastery wins outright as you are getting the full benefit from proficiency points as well as full potential from the weapon.

In none of my BG playthoughs have I ever considered a particular weapons damage type a major factor in how I equip my characters. I always thought weapon properties were the primary consideration for choosing weapons, not damage type.
Simply put, if you are playing unmodded BGII go for diversity. 2 pips gets you the majority of the proficiency bonus and you can choose and pick the best weapon for the situation (fire on hit for trolls, charm protection for vampires etc.).

If you are messing around with mods it depends on how strong you made mastery then. :)
I just noticed that I never played a pure fighter. Only derivations like f/m f/c or f/r. But generally I think 2 points is enough.
Full specialization. You're not going to switch your weapon often.
