Unfortunately, i fyou bought it on steam but want it on GOG, you'll need to re-buy it on GOG. Steam and GOG are not cross-compatible.
Once you buy it on GOG and download the installers, it's yours forever (unlike Steam, where account lockouts/loss means you lose everything)... but until you buy it on GOG, you're on your own.
Once you've purchased the game on GOG, it'll show up in your library and you can either use GOG Galaxy to install it, or download the installers and patches individually and install it manually from the BG3 tab in your library.
Fiachra: Is the GoG version still doing a complete reinstall of the game when updating with the latest patch?
I stop playing a few patches ago until they stop developing new patches because of this issue and my rural crappy internet. Originally used the offline installer before installing with the GoG launcher but that was also causing problems early on, don't remember what the problem was.
You might wait until Patch 8 comes out. I imagine that'll be pretty big, as it adds a lot of new content (sub-classes, etc) and new features (crossplay) that I suspect will result in change to a large portion of the code base. At a minimum, it'll be a large download. Worst case, they won't have a good way to patch in all the small changes and the "patch" will be a full reinstall.
Patch 8 is, allegedly, the past patch they'll be releasing. I'm sure there will be hotfixes, but those tend to be smaller and don't involve a full reinstall. Once Patch 8 is out, I'm guessing (with no insider knowledge... just an outsider's gut check) that you'll be past the worst of it.
