Qwallath is right, saving your game on lower levels is a nice workaround if you have this bug. It only seems to rear its ugly head on the first level of the dungeon.
I'm getting this problem as well, but waiting doesn't seem to help for any of my saves. Maybe I need to wait longer than five minutes to load a save game?
My saves used to work properly, but after leaving the game for a couple of months, then trying to get back into the saves I got the same issues. I could start a new game without a problem (didn't test saves), but I cannot be bothered to do so. But I'm going to try some of the fixes here, and hopefully get back...

I see there are a couple of "manual fixes" noted here, but I'll write a concrete way I myself use anyway.
Once you get to the point when you're heading for Arx for the first time, save in that cave on level 2, just before you get to the city. Keep this save, and whenever you come back to the game, load this (it takes ~3 secs for me), and then load any other save.
I'm having the same problem. Though, the manual fixes here don't work at all, relaoading an older, working save then loading my main save, nothing. Changing the dual core affinity, nothing. I takes a good 5 minutes for alt-f4 to close the game for me, it's making it pretty much unplayable.
Ok. There has got to be a way to fix this. It's driving me crazy. Sometimes the manual workarounds actually work, but sometimes not. I just got back from a week away and all I wanted to do was play some Arx, and I just finished TWO HOURS of trying to load a save, any save, with any workaround.
Guess I'll just start a new game. Very, very frustrating. Makes the game almost unplayable, if not literally totally unplayable.
Once more into the breach...
Same problem here, and it seems to be getting worse as the game progresses? Main offenders seem to be the tavern and the city of arx, though right now all my saves seem to refuse to start. With the amount of time put in by now, this makes me very sad.
This is really the worst bug I've encountered, since I countered the random crashes and omg-you're-in-my-personal-space crashes by saving often =/
the workarounds mentioned
1. loading a functional save first
2. saving in 'safe' areas (seem to be those with less human npcs?)
3. alt-tab, patience, alt-tab back
4. just patience
all seem to work, sometimes. When one doesn't work, another might. It's all kinda strange.

Is there any word of a fix for this on the way? All of my saves are bugged out in this manner. It's really annoying that I can't continue, especially considering how much time I've already put towards the game.
This is how to get those pesky saves to load. This worked for me every time in the tavern.
You'll need a screen saver timed to one minute (I use one where I'm prompted to put in a password) so you can see what you're doing....
1) Load save in the tavern - when the screen goes black. Leave it alone. Let the screen saver kick in.
2) Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to get the screensaver login prompt. Put in the password. You'll see your desktop minus icons and toolbars.
3) Press Ctrl+Esc - this activates the Windows Toolbars and programs. You will have minimal mouse functionality, but it will be enough.
4) Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up task manager. Arx Fatalis in the Applications tab is "Not Responding".
5) Go to Arx.exe in the Processes Tab of the Task Manager (which is at 99 PC usage and is the source of the freeze. Duh!) Right-click it and change the priority from Normal to Realtime.
5) Your PC should lean to the side, fart, not respond to anything for 15 seconds, then display and function normally. Arx Fatalis will display as "Running" in the Applications tab of the Task Manager, not to mention a much lower number than 99 for CPU usage in the Processes tab.) Make sure to put Arx.exe back to a normal process priority.
6) X out task manager, click on Arx in the toolbar to restore.
7) If you hear game sounds, but don't see the game, Hold CTRL until the game displays.
Voila! You have successfully resuscitated your save!

Is there ANY easier way than this?
It doesn't work for me.
There's no way to patch the game at all?

BananaJane: Is there ANY easier way than this?
I don't feel like doing this every time I want to play.

I have had no real problems loading any save, either by loading it directly or by loading another one first and then loading the troublesome one (which drastically cuts down the loading delay). If all else fails, loading a working save and changing areas (i.e. places with loading screen between them) before loading the troublesome save seems to work. I have played through the game about one and a half times now and I have never had to resort to such an enormous list of steps.
For best results, save regularly and keep at least one save in an area that is guaranteed to load (such as the goblin prisons on level 3).

I saved too regularly, all my saves are in the tavern and outside the tavern, and both of them don't load.
Is there a way to play the game in a window?
Hey everybody,
I also have had issues with loading saved games and I thought of giving my two cents in case they might help.
My situation is the same as eveybody else's: I save in what seems to be an unsafe area and when I load the saved game I am confronted by a black screen (sometimes there is music in the background, sometimes just silence, sometimes the gauntlet cursor is stuck at the bottom of the screen).
To unlock the game I alt-tab out (it might take a full minute, so do not insist) and once I am out I alt-tab back in and after a 15 seconds wait the games works perfectly once more.
I also had another weird issue with saved data. I lost my saved data and I started a new game from scratch, then, trying to figure out how to get the game working again ( I hadn't tried alt-tab at that point) I reinstalled the game and the old saved games popped up again, whereas the newest ones had disappeared.
What I've noticed is that this mainly occurs when:
1. There are a lot of NPCs near the save point.
2. You are loading the game directly when you start Arx fatalis. I.e. the problem does not hit until you exit the game. You get better results when you load another saved game and load the desired save game afterwards.
To prevent it, try to save in a sparsely populated area (near a portal so you can teleport to the area that you need to get to).
If you forgot and saved in a crowded area, try 2. or some of the other suggestions listed in this thread.
I just wanted to add that saving in scarcely populated levels (not just in scarcely populated areas, i.e. the outside of Arx) eliminates the problem completely.
