*Whew* Glad there was a thread with a fix on this issue. I was ready to give up and cut my losses with this game if I couldn't get my black screen save to work!
Luckily I was able to get slight visuals and it was right from the beginning of Arx, and I was able to make my way to the stairs by following the map. Then loaded Arx back up. This game is really going to keep me on my toes as to where I should save.

Workaround. Definitely not a fix.
