Hi !
I have got a save-game where i am unable to loot any corpse or chest.
When i click on a chest or a corpse, and i am sure that there is something to loot,
just nothing happens. I don't even get the "There is nothing so loot here" message when you click on an empty corpse. Also i am unable to pickpocket someone. There again nothing happens, when i click on the pick-pocket symbol and then on a person (e.g. a shopkeeper).
When i start a new game, everything seems to be working the right way again.
Can someone please help me ? I already played that save a few hours and i wouldn't like to start over again.
I am playing this game gog.com vanilla, without additional mods, patches, hacking, etc...
And i already have tried reinstalling the game.

If you are running Vista or Win 7, you should right click the setup.exe and click "Run as an administrator" when you install. If you did not do this, I would uninstall and reinstall using the right-click method, backing up your save files first.
It may just be a graphics problem. Even though you are running the plain vanilla version, I would add the -no3d -douiblebuffer switches.
Try setting the path in the game shortcut (right-click, properties) to "C:\Program files\GOG.com\Arcanum\Arcanum.exe" -no3d -doublebuffer
Adding the -no3d -doublebuffer seems to cure several graphics problems.
You add only -no3d -doublebuffer . . . your path may be different . . .=)
Make sure in the shortcut properties, under Compatibility, you have "Run this program as an administrator" if running Vista / Win 7
See attached image.
Edit: if the above does not fix the problem, my only other suggestion would be to install, at the least, the Unofficial Arcanum Patch as it fixes many bugs. I have it, the HR maps mod and the HR patch installed on the GOG version with no problems. Just remember if you are running Vista / Win 7, right-click and run the patches as an administrator.

Hi Stuff !
Thanks for your suggestions, but neither the no3d/doublebuffer switch nor the Unofficial Patch helped. Only thing that changed with the patch was that my npc companion looted a chest i had bashed open for the sake of testing. If i try to access it, my character runs toward it and stops directly in front of it. Normally the loot windows should open or the "There is no loot" message should appear, but neither is happening.
I think a graphics bug, where the chest isn't displayed right, as the red ring indicator is shown below the chest, indicating, that i am pointing at it.

Strange bug . . .have not heard of this one. I went back to the crash site, clicked on the chest there and it opened just as it should when I ran up to it.
My only suggestion now would be to make sure you are running the latest video drivers. I will do some research problem.
Edit: this is the GOG version you are running?

I too went back to the crash side, but could only find corpses saying that there is no loot.
Can you tell me where the chest is ? I probably didn't got it and would like to check it.
I recorded a short video demonstrating the bug and i am uploading it right now. I will post it as soon as uploading is finished.

In the North West corner, in the bushes next to the camp fire.
Edit: Try pressing the R key to come out of combat mode - than try to loot something.

I tried the chest you mentioned. I don't remember looting it, so there should be something left, but again nothing happened. I also tried to press R, but i wasn't in combat mode, so that didn't help either.
I am currently running arcanum as provided by gog.com + unofficial patch + no3d/doublebuffer switch + admin rights.
could you try out one of my save games ?
i uploaded it here: http://rapidshare.com/files/350282554/Save.rar
it is a save right after killing the schuyler brothers. my character is standing in front of the unlocked magickal chest and the three schuyler corpses are also unlooted, so there is plenty to try.

You are correct - I can't loot chests or bodies. I cannot change to Real Time combat mode either. Maybe a corrupted save?
The Zombie bodies do say "Nothing to Loot"
Edit: Are you using the -window switch?

That is exactly the answer i didn't want to hear :)
I will try an older save game and check if/when the error occurs.
I have made a habit of cycling through a couple of save slots in RPG.
You never know when you screw up a success roll or make a poor decision.
No, i haven't used the window switch

That is a lot of progress to give up . . . I will continue to look for a solution but it seems your file may be corrupted as it works the same for me . . .=(
(The -window switch does not work well . .=) . . . just asking )

Yeah. My oldest save was at lvl 7 and it is bugged too. So that means I have to start over again. Well at least I can try not to waste any skill points this time -.-
I just wonder myself how i could play 3 whole levels without looting anything. Are there really so many courier quests in Tarant ? ^^
Anyway, thanks for your help

I wouldn't delete the game save as a solution may appear from other community members . . .=) Good luck!

Try not saving and going with the bad decisions or mistakes you make, it makes RPG games so much more interesting to play.
Hmm, i don't know.
When i play an RPG i try to achieve a "perfect game". Being stuck with a poor decision, especially if it results in, for example, loosing a party member or npc i like, seriously dampens the fun for me.
After thinking about it, I can't help but wonder if your "looting" bug was a bug common in the vanilla version of Arcanum? One of the many bugs the UAP fixed? Playing the game in a UAP install does not "undo" the problem since the problem still existed when I tried to play it using my install.
Since you installed the UAP . . . it will be interesting to see if the bug reoccurs . . .=)
I agree about the multiple saves . . .=) . . . I accidently killed Virgil early on, having a recent save allowed me to continue without the nagging loss of a very helpful NPC. Especially early in the game when you are not up to speed on exactly how the game is played.
Since you already installed the UAP, the High Res town maps mod is nice as well . .
