Does the game still have multiplayer in the gog version?
Yeap, I use evolve to play it with friends.
It does, but only LAN ,of course, that are way's to "LAN" with people over the Internet. However the regular online mode no longer works since it used GameSpy.

Do you play High Treason? Or just Direct Action?

Can't seem to get HT to work, the clients are disconnected on the load screen.

[Edit:] Got HT to work once. No idea how. Direct Action works every time over GameRanger.

Ah, the old LAN disconnecting / "Server Closed" error. My greatest nemesis.

Me and my friends have been trying to find the root cause for years and we suspect it might be VPN related.

- We've tested Hamachi, GameRanger and Tunngle.
- We've tried hosting 1v1 games to see who's disconnecting from each other.
- We have tested the original disc and Steam versions - exact same problem.
- We've tried with and without custom maps/mods.

In a nutshell, no matter what we do, players randomly disconnect during the loading screen and sometimes get a "server closed" error. Other times it just hangs while loading and needs to be killed via task manager. Obviously the host never gets this problem.

That being said, it seems to work fine on a physical Ethernet. This is what makes us think it doesn't like playing over VPN for some reason.

If anyone has a cure for this, remember sharing is caring! :)

Just wondering, do you ever get the "Server Closed" / random disconnect error when playing on Evolve?

Also, how many people do you play with? Do you just do 1v1, or do you do large games and/or "comp stomps" with AI?

(Sorry to hassle you with questions, but this bug has been really pissing me off for years)

So I've found something odd.

"Black Gold Fever" works consistently on LAN with 2 players on the same team (in slots 1 & 2) and 1 computer (in slot 3).

Have tried it over Evolve and on the same Physical LAN, both work fine.

It's weird. this specific configuration works, but if you make any change (like forgetting to put the computer on a team) then it stops working.

Some 1v1 maps seem to work as well (most reliable so far is "A Bridge too far").

It seems there's more to this problem than just irregularites in the network stack. It feels like there's some sort of negotiation between the server and clients when launching a game, since there's always a delay before the loading starts on the load screen.

What I mean is that "Progress" is always 0% for ~10-30 seconds before it starts to load (or you get kicked with the "server closed" error).

Also, does anyone else become unable to join/create LAN games once you get the "server closed" error? It seems to me like there is a separate component that is loaded when you go to the LAN screen the first time, which crashes when the "server closed" error occurs.

@ OMGCLASSICGAMES:
I have the same issue with trying to set up another session after a failed attempt. Always shows the same "Server is closed" message. Restarting is the only solution so far.

I have tested your suggested setting (BlackGold, 2 humans VS 1 bot, Us&Talon VS Consortium [?], standard game settings) but the game still gives me the finger.

I was extremely happy to see ActOfWar being revisited and functioning on Win7. But not being able to set up a simple LAN session kind of makes me think about the 30 days money back option. I always viewed the game as a multiplayer oriented RTS.

As soon as I find something like a fix I'll deliver...

Server Disconnected/Closed Problem
=============================
The AOW-DA and AOW-HT runned on Win7, Win8, Win10 stay to long on the "Loading Progress" screan loading the map. This cause a connection time-out, making the server disconnected/Closed.

This can be avoid by playing on light maps (+- 3MB) like the AOW-HT custom map (MiddleMan by Sforce)) that can by found on my AOW Archive (https://mega.nz/#F!48RXRJDL!A-hTtg_iddLVSdRrwmhXkA)

.

How to play AOW in LAN (Multiplayer)
=============================
1) On the main screen, go to (Options -> Network Settings)
2) Check (ENABLE NETWORK PORT) and (NETWORK PORT = 12222)

3) On the Host side (PC 1)
------------------------------------
a) On the main screen, go to (LAN)
b) Click on (Create) and choose all the setting we want, like in the normal (Engagement) mode.
c) Way for other players to join. then click (Launch)

3) On the Guest side (PC 2)
--------------------------------------
a) On the main screen, go to (LAN)
b) Click on (Refresh List) and choose the game available on the "LAN Forum" table and click (Join)
c) Choose our color, Unit, and team. Then click (Ready) and wait for the Host to start the game

.

Nice day and play for all :)

I think I've found a fix for anyone who's still interested.

Please refer the attached image on this post - make sure all players change their compatibility settings on your AOW executable to exactly as shown.

I've tested this on a few maps with friends and so far it's worked every time. I even did a comp-stomp on Yellow Cake with 3 humans vs all AI. No timeouts, no disconnects, just worked first time.

For anyone who can't view the attached image in my last post, here's a TL;DR set of instructions:

1. Go to properties on your AOW executable, select the compatibility tab.
2. Click "change settings for all users" at the bottom.
3. Select Win95 mode from the drop-down box.
4. Tick "disable visual themes", "disable desktop composition" and "disable display scaling" (the bottom 3).
5. Click OK on both windows to close them.

You do not need to run AOW in administrator mode.
