Cyjack: I don't think 3-4 million is particularly realistic. That would make it one of the, if not *the* greatest selling PC RPGs of all time, at least if that wonky list is to be taken at all seriously.

Nice to fantasize about that, but this game was never going to be that embraced by the mainstream public. It would need wide reaching casual appeal. Its a brilliant game, but it's just too quirky and challenging for those kind of numbers. Single player crpgs are a niche genre, and TW2 is a niche rpg. I think if the game does a third of that, CDPR would be ecstatic.

Now, throw in eventual console sales, and thats a different story maybe. Hope Im wrong.

chautemoc: If selling 1.7m copies of a game on a single platform means that game is "niche", everything that isn't Starcraft, COD, etc. is "niche."
Im just basing this on that list, which I have already said seems a little weird to me.

But according to that list, the biggest CRPG seller is Diablo 2 at 4 mil (quibbling about its "RPG" credentials aside). Theres no way TW2 has Diablo 2 reach.

Next is DA:O , which the list indicates may be contaminated by console sales number, at 3.x mil.

And then theres a big droppoff, with storied games like BG1&2 , that have been selling for a decade now, and NWN only at 2 Mil. We've always known that CRPGs arent as big a seller as other genres.

Tw2 would have to be a runaway success...a phenomenon...to reach something like 4 mil PC sales. And based on how many people are already resistant to the challenge level, and the Mature content rather than the mass market friendly T rating, I don see any reasonable expectation of that happening. Not on the PC alone, but eventual console sales will be a different story.

But it certainly deserves that kind of success, and I hope Im wrong. I think it will be a very successful game regardless for CDPR, especially given the modest budget by triple A standards.

There's a glaring omission in that Wikipedia list that can't be included as there aren't any official figures. It's everyone's favourite (chortle), Oblivion (and Fallout 3, and Fallout New Vegas).

Bethesda/ZeniMax are a private company and they don't release their sales figures, but you can bet your backside that it's a lot.
3-4 million is incredibly high for any game, let alone a single-platform CRPG. Anyone expecting it, or even arguing it is a threshold for success, is in dreamland.

TW1 did very very well to reach a million sales in the first few months, and TW2's target should be to meet and hopefully exceed that. Even 2 million by the year's end would put it in the playing field of the biggest RPGs around in terms of sales and hype.

Raye: are you sure about that millions of preorders on PC? cus that would have it smashing PC sales records left and right. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_PC_video_games

Cyjack: Wait a minute.* Dungeon Lords* sold as much as Bioshock?

I'm not so sure about that list.
I rate Dungeon Lords as the worst RPG I've ever played! I wouldn't trust that list either!
How many sales for this game now?

... that's crazy. Not only did it beat DA2 in the first week in the EMEAA category, if you look, it sold more in it's first week than DA2 did in TEN (105,882). Though if you bring up DA:O, it had a much better 10 week total in the same category (244,521) due to better word of mouth. Lets hope TW2's long term drop off rate is more similar to Origins than DA2 :p

also, to make this less TW2 vs DA2, for first week totals, it beat every single game in the RPG list aside from WoW and the Diablo games (they don't have weekly totals posted, but they were probably very high).

revial: I do have half an espresso fudge cheesecake in my fridge though. :/
Hmm, maybe would have been better for your peace of mind to keep tat part for yourself. If your fridge gets raided, try to ignore it. :D
Yeah dont expect too much, The Witcher 2 is in no way shape or form Mass Market Mainstream material, in fact most Bethesda and Bioware fans would hate Witcher 2 because Old School is very Niche. While Witcher 1 sold 1 mill units, keep in mind it was based on the NWN Engine and thus less hardcore so the mainstream was able to enjoy it more. Witcher 2 is a whole other game. Fanboys might think its the greatest thing ever but your typical CoD and Bioware player is going to think it sucks.

Also its not on consoles yet, and the bulk of sales on a game is from console sales.

VG Charts are totally innacurate, I wouldn't use them

Which is why I found a list that counted only sales for PC. Though it may be outdated and such in some respects, it's the best gauge I've been able to find so far to show what kinds of sales figures PC games can put up... I'm fully aware that console sales outstrip PC sales by a wide margin. If you've got a better one, by all means share it.

Sometimes though, I wish for the Diamond charts of comic books, having to compile figures from different regions an sources, all the while ignoring the juggernaut of Steam, is just asking for inaccuracies, but it's the best we've got.

Yeah, sure.

Whatever bias you think exists in their figures it's there for all titles so at least they're a pretty good way to get an overall idea and draw some comparisons.

You're never going to get 'accurate' numbers anyway.

That is not always true re console sales. It depends on the game really. If it's a mass marketable game, then consoles will definitely outsell PCs. In the case of the TW series, I'm not so sure. Anyone who has both a console and a game-playing PC (quite a few judging by TW's fanbase) will opt for the PC. Don't forget, too, digital downloads aren't tracked in PC sales figures.

I think it's been proven a few times that VG chartz based their numbers on incomplete sales figures, speculation and just plain godsend figures. I could create a website and post sales figures and I'd have as much chances as they would to be accurate.

Unlike NPD which has ties with manufacturer and distributors, VG chartz as none of those.

You think it has been proven a few times ? Oh well, that changes everything, with such a reliable and properly backed up statement i'll just stop taking their numbers seriously then.

Anyway, if someone has a problem with VG chartz figures just ignore them and post the figures from whatever source you deem 'accurate'.
