Cyjack: Wait a minute.* Dungeon Lords* sold as much as Bioshock?

I'm not so sure about that list.
avatar
Raye: PC only, remember, the console versions of Bioshock are not included there
Yes. But...Dungeon Lords. And Bioshock.

k.e.i.n: I think Witcher 2 will be close to SC2 on the best selling ranks.
Blizzard is a whole other story...takes a good decade to build up that kind of following.

On a second look, yes, 4-5m sold might be a little high, but I hope Witcher 2 will sell as many as 3m copies. Considering Witcher 1 sold 1.2m without much hype/promotion.

3m seems plausible. That would be wonderful to see.
I've heard they're hoping for 3 or 4m? Something like that.

It's astounding that there are two different versions of every major Blizzard IP in that list. Wow. They aren't necessarily my favorite game but that is phenomenal.
Everyone's ignoring the Sims. The dumbest game ever developed imo, but probably not coincidentally, the most popular. ;p

I guess, my point is that you don't necessarily want your game selling too well (as a player), as that usually means it's mass market drivel, with a few exceptions.

I'd be happy with 3 million for W2.

I'm not a total Blizzard fan but they do a lot of things as should be done, and very well (quality, accessibility, reasonable system requirements, optimization, post-launch support, etc). They have their spot for good reasons.

Skorne: Sad when an amazing and unique game like this is happy to sell 100,000 copies, yet drivel like MW3 already has millions of preorders on PC alone.
avatar
chautemoc: Don't spread false information. PC figures are rarely released, especially not by the likes of Activision. And like many PC titles, it will sell steadily over time. The retail situation is poor in NA so sales are considerably dependent on word of mouth/digital. TW1 sold 1.7m...I'm sure this will do 2m+ eventually.
I apologise that was a figure I just guessed at but CoD games do have a tendency to break sales records it no doubt will sell millions.

http://www.somethingawful.com/d/feature-articles/week-life-ithe-2.php People who hate the Sims lack imagination and a sense of a humor.

Dumb, mass appeal stuff will always be more popular (not that COD doesn't have some merit). I really would not be surprised to see TW2 outsell Black Ops on PC, though. Pretty sure Battlefield sells better on PC than COD.

Also remember that Starcraft is a competitive 'sport' in Asia. While I don't think 2 has quite caught on in that way (yet? I dunno, it's not something I'm interested in aside from as a weird phenomenon) that lucky fluke which I doubt they planned on really helped boost their sales.

I think a 3M goal for TW2 would be reasonable.
4 million would be a nice number, since the game only cost as low as 10-15 million dollars

4 million would be 200,000,000$ in revenue, which is intense.

They've probably sold close to 500,000 copies so far, which already puts them over 25 million in revenue

Raye: I haven't heard about US or worldwide figures, but it is the top selling PC game in the UK and the 5th best selling game acoss all platforms, also in the UK. This did not account for digital sales, only boxed copies of the game. So yeah, it's doing pretty well.
Good to hear. Placing that high with just boxed retail sales is a great sign.
I don't think 3-4 million is particularly realistic. That would make it one of the, if not *the* greatest selling PC RPGs of all time, at least if that wonky list is to be taken at all seriously.

Nice to fantasize about that, but this game was never going to be that embraced by the mainstream public. It would need wide reaching casual appeal. Its a brilliant game, but it's just too quirky and challenging for those kind of numbers. Single player crpgs are a niche genre, and TW2 is a niche rpg. I think if the game does a third of that, CDPR would be ecstatic.

Now, throw in eventual console sales, and thats a different story maybe. Hope Im wrong.

If selling 1.7m copies of a game on a single platform means that game is "niche", everything that isn't Starcraft, COD, etc. is "niche."

People don't get this, but even on consoles 3-4 million sellers aren't so common as many think.
