And I'm not really a fan of mute heroes with no personality.
H-L2 is a fine shooter, but nowhere near my personal list of all time the best gmes.
Heck, Portal is overrated too. Great idea, great setting, great atmosphere but piss easy and if you can complete it in an hour or two without a single drop of sweat, you're better off just telling a story. Portal 2 did it better by at least having different settings and I loved how the old Aperture Science parts were revealed - in fact, I was blown away by it. But once again, the puzzles were piss easy.

On the HL2 front I don't mind the longer "boring" sections so much, the driving and what-not. Exploring that world was actually the cool part of the game for me. The tedium for me tended to be in the sections you describe, endless corridor battles that felt monotonous. Episode 2's ant lion caves is probably one of the worst levels ever made in an otherwise decent shooter.
My favorite HL2 level is the riverboat one though, which everyone else bitches about, so what do I know.

Half-Life 2 and its expansions. Good god, those games are so overrated it's not even funny. Epitome of storytelling? What story? I saw pretty much nothing for "story" in there. It was essentially a rails-shooter with very little in the way of exploring. The enemies were some of the most generic I've seen.
Second place I'd have to put as a tie between Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed. Both were thoroughly "Meh" to me. I've played all 3 ME games and the first two AC games. The AC ones were some of the very few that I've sold off after completing. Far too many pointless time-padding side quests and don't get me started on those goddamn flags and feathers.

I meant in the US, that 94 average was drilled into my head in college. Not sure why I left "in America" out or thought it was relevant.
And for the record I don't think IQ means anything, but I do think easy puzzles means mainstream success.

Puzzle games should always be tricky because otherwise, it falls flat. In Portal 1 & 2, 95% of the time was spent moving between puzzles and executing a solution - which is the dullest part of a puzzle game. Finding the solution and fiddling with it is where the real fun comes. In games such as The Incredibly Machine, you get a much more polished approach which shows that Valve really have no experience when it comes to puzzle games.

When I saw this thread topic Half Life 2 instantly popped into my mind.
The game is good, but nowhere near the hype it gets. If the game had everything the same but it was made by EA it wouldn't get nearly the same amount of praise it gets today.
On consoles I'm adding the Uncharted series. Again, good games, but when I tried them I didn't get what the big deal was.

Heck, GTA IV was claimed to the best as well and we all know that it has received a lot of flack these days for all sorts of flaws it has. Frankly, I still find Vice City to be the best GTA game for several reasons.
Heck, I own a PS1, PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, Gamecube & Wii yet haven't bought a console exclusive game in 3 years because none appeal to me. I think it's mostly a pissing match between console fanboys. "Gears of War is THE best game and it's Xbox exclusive, suck on that!" bla bla bla.

I never understood the excitement about Bayonetta. It's a good game, but not nearly as outstanding as I expected it to be, judging by how it is praised by fans and critics.
