Random_Coffee: How are the Tomb Raider-games? I've played the two most recent ones, and one from 2006 (Legend?). I thought they were pretty good. Also, can I use a controller in the older TR-games?
They are quite different from those you've played, they (well, the ones before Angel of Darkness, that is) have clunky tank controls and AFAIK they don't come with native controller support. There might be ways to set up the use of a controller via DOSBox, but it would require some research and work on your part. The older games are usually played entirely with keybooard and without mouse, for movement you don't use WASD but arrow keys.

Some parts of Legend might feel a little similar to these old games, but there is much less handholding in them, the levels aren't as linear, more about exploration than story (the games do have story and some scripted events, but much less so than the more recent ones), and there are no quick-time-events. Not sure how to explain it, did you check a gameplay video on YouTube? (This one for example has gameplay footage of all games.)

I'm thinking of the 1st Gabriel Knight game, but I'm not sure. Looking at the screenshots I remembered that I've played this game as a kid. I didn't speak English, so I was just randomly walking around, but I clearly remember the bookstore, the map screen and the park, so it picked my interest now, BUT
- afaik you can die, which is something I absolutely hate in pont and click games. Are those death scenes annoyingly frequent/obscure, or can they be avoided with common sense?
- It's tagged as horror, and I don't like horror. Spooky is ok, but gore/jumpscare/hide from monsters is not. What type of "horror" this game has?
- Do I need the sequels to understand the story?

So... can anyone recommend me this game? :)

I played this a long time ago, but from what I remember:

- Deaths are not frequent at all. From memory I'd say there aren't more than 2-3 occasions when you can die, probably only during the showdown.
- It's subtle, story-telling horror, not in-your-face, no jump scares or hiding from monsters, and if there is gore (I don't remember), it would be just a few red pixels (EDIT: no more than this), but it's mostly about talking, detective work and solving puzzles.
- Each GK game has a different story, only the main characters remain the same. You don't necessarily need to know one to enjoy the other.

It's not my favorite point-and-click adventure ever, but back then I thought it was a nice one.

Oh, thank you! I'm buying it then :) I love detective work and puzzle solving :3
That screenshot you edited up there is not scary at all, so I'll be fine ;)

man I'm planning on grabbing these.

HOMM 3 (Maybe the HOMM bundle in general? idk., if Heroes Choronicles were in it, I'd do it)
Ancient Cities Bundle
Lethis
Baldur's Gate 2
Master of Magic
Tropico Pack (Unless someone can convince me to get it on steam.)
Roller Coaster Tycoon
Giants of Induistry 2
Both Total Annihilation Games
Eador: Genesis
Xenonauts
Renowned Explorers
Evil Genius
Startopia
Dungeon Keeper 2
Steamworld Dig
Torchlight 1+2
Lords of Magic
Final Liberation:Warhammer 40k
The Disciples Bundles (I just know it's gonna come.)
The Empire Earth series when it goes on sale.
The Nations +Alien Nations
D&D Dragonshard (Unless someone can point me to a better highly customizable RPG game that's not tooo old.)
Maybe the Kings Bounty and Settler's bundles if they're worth getting. (What are the best games in each of these bundles? )
Eyes of Maj'Eyal (Love me some fun custonizeable RPGs)
Maybe Grandia? and Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky SC.
The Majesty Games
Simcity 4
Fantasy General
Shovel Knight
Planescape Torment

Thoughts on this list? I kow I really want HOMM 3, and The Ancient City Builders, Lethis, Xenonauts, and Renowned Explorers; but the last 3 are also on steam lol.

I've heard good things about most of these games, but I have no def. buys outside of HOMM 3. I'll wait for Torchlight and Empire Earth Series to go on sale in the meantime.

Leroux: Anyone played the Sea Dogs games? It seems Sea Dogs is regarded as a much better game than Caribbean Tales, am I right in assuming that only the latter allows a choice between male and female character though?
avatar
GR00T: Haven't played them but was just looking at them as a possible purchase. Read a few reviews of Caribbean Tales (not just the ones on GOG) and decided against it. Still thinking about Sea Dogs though.
Be warned that so far I've been completely unable to locate a manual for Sea Dogs, and no walkthrough I've discovered yet lists all the commands. It's rendered the game unplayable for me.

Czarpoon: Torchlight 1
Please, allow me.

*whirls on rest of community* Dibs!

(Torchlight was an old freebie, we literally couldn't gift it to anyone for ages, everyone had it.)

Random_Coffee: If you have a friend who is into RPGs, hook the PC up to the TV and get two controllers :)
Aaaaand you wake up: it was just a dream ;P
F-f-f-friends? INTO RPGs?
:(
Ok, I loved Shadowrun Dragonfall, I also enjoyed Shadowrun Hong Kong (but it was worse). I heard that Shadowrun Returns is the worst of them and I'm not sure if I should get it (the reviews are mixed too), I know that $3 may be not much but right now I can only get one game so I would like to get something good that I will enjoy for the next few days and not be dissapointed. Any thought?

I played the original when it was released and I recently played through the 20th anniversary remake.
During the whole playthrough, I only encountered 2 puzzles where I actually died. One of them taught me really quickly that I just didn't have the correct items for the solution yet. The other one was annoying.

It's a mature, voodoo themed story with a few bloody/gory scenes (pictures of the voodoo murders, mostly). No jump scares or anything.

MadyNora: - Do I need the sequels to understand the story?
No, it's a separate, complete story. It does open the possibility of a sequel, but it's not split into acts or episodes.

MadyNora: So... can anyone recommend me this game? :)
To summarize; If you can stand one annoying scene that requires you to (basically) click quickly in the correct spot (as opposed to the standard adventure-y puzzle solution), go for it. It's a really well-written adventure (for it's time) and I enjoyed it a lot.

-edit- and in the time it took me to type this, Leroux basically said exactly the same thing, only much quicker :)

Oh, and of course, if you buy enough other games, you get the 20th Anniversary edition for free :)

Can someone recommend me a game with storm level something atmospheric like "hard rain" on l4d2?

Thank you for the answer! I ended up buying it :)
If I like it I might get the anniversary edition in a future sale. Definetly not now. My total budget for this sale is... 2,5€ :D

In Hard Reset Redux, the player has to fight in the rain on the first level. The cyberpunk graphics are pretty cool.

That you might need a decade to play through these? ;)

Czarpoon: D&D Dragonshard (Unless someone can point me to a better highly customizable RPG game that's not tooo old.)
Well, what do you mean by "highly customizable RPG"? How is Dragonshard customizable? And I always thought it was more of a RTS games than an RPG?

I'm not a great fan of RTS, strategy and building sims, but Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate 2 are among my favorite RPGs, so if you actually plan on playing those and you don't mind their age, they're definitely good purchases. Just keep in mind that BG2 continues the story of BG to some extent, and that Planescape: Torment is very text-heavy, more about reading and thinking than about good combat (INT, WIS and CHA are actually important stats in this game, you'll probably get more out of the game with those than with the usual suspects STR, DEX and CON).

Steamworld Dig is a very nice, not too challenging, not too long but very addictive platformer. I recommend it.
Should I buy Hyperdimension Neptunia if I'm NOT into 10yo manga nymphettes? In other words does this game has anything to offer for non total otaku freaks (no offence)?
Discount is tempting and I kinda like variety in my gaming life but visuals of this game sorta scares me. Also some people complains about boring grindfest similar to asian MMO's which is really bad. For instance I wasn't able to finish FF XIII because it was too dull for me, is gameplay better/worse in Neptunia?

Shadowrun Returns is by no means a bad game. It's just that people were disappointed because they were expecting a more complex and less linear RPG. Dragonfall and Hong Kong improved many aspects of it, so it might feel a bit more limiting to you, too, now. You get one hub building for in between missions, and you play one mission after another, instead of getting to choose what to do next and instead of exploring a whole city hub. There isn't much NPC interaction apart from the main story. The story is nice enough but nowhere near as good as Dragonfall. And battles are a bit less varied and tactical. I found the final battle a bit annoying because it wasn't quite clear what I had to do. But it's still the same Shadowrun, settings, mechanics and writing are all there. And when people talk about how bad it was or how they disliked it, I can't relate. I enjoyed it a lot as well. It's just that the other two games are even better. So whether you'd enjoy it or not just depends on your expectations. If you're a fan of the other games, I'd get it, if I was in your shoes. Or is there any other game of similar interest that you consider getting for your $3?
