Well, blasters being common is no different than firearms being common, and still some people do train fencing, sword fighting and stuff like that, and police uses batons and soldiers carry knives. If anything, it makes more sense in the often technologicaly inconsistent Star Wars universe full of various strange cultures, often seemingly very anachronistic.

I doubt soldiers are trained in sword fighting, more likely in knife and hand-to-hand combat, which is completely different.

In SW it could be plausible on poor planets with low technology, or some strange traditions.
But for common folks or imperial soldiers? Nah..

Like I said, different cultures, where it may well be far more common. In Star Trek Klingons love their Bat'leths, swords and other melee weapons, even though they have perfectly good disruptors. And yeah, no shit our real world military training is different than the Star Wars universe. I'm pretty sure that if fighting droids, Wookiees and people wielding laser swords was likely to happen, we'd train our soldiers different too :D

And about light sabers: they're rare and made by Jedi.
With mind control, force chocke or push, any melee would be useless against them.

Soldiers are expendable for the empire, if they can just slow down a jedi until reinforcements arrive, that's easily worth it no matter how many the Jedi might chop to pieces in the process.

And yeah, lighsabers are rare, but not quite enough as not to be a threat. In the new novels there was a group of cultists post-Return of the Jedi who worshiped Vader and sought out lighsabres across the galaxy to use in an uprising againts the New Republic. And they weren't force users.

By "relativistic" I just ment that in SW lightspeed exists as maximum speed in realspace. And in realspace all ships (in films at least) move with speeds much slower than speed of llight. So yes, SW doesn't deal with relativistic effects. When ships travel between planets and star systems they use hyperdrive the unconventional means to travel faster than light. I watched this film for the first time today, to say it was a pile of shit is offensive to shit. Political agenas, gravity in space, Rose, terrible acting, scenes stolen from Empire and Return. No thanks! I'm done.

Saw it a couple of days ago. Pretty much went eh in the end. Plot makes little sense to me and i feel that the casino scene should have been cut from the movie. Some nice special effects though .
