But.. I doubt that many non-Jedi have been trained in sword-fighting* in a futuristic world where blasters are common.
For Jedi it makes sense, because with light sabers they can also deflect lasers.

Well, blasters being common is no different than firearms being common, and still some people do train fencing, sword fighting and stuff like that, and police uses batons and soldiers carry knives. If anything, it makes more sense in the often technologicaly inconsistent Star Wars universe full of various strange cultures, often seemingly very anachronistic.But..
