The first group of people that has split from the Catholic church/Latin Church in the past is called Orthodox Church (officialy Eastern Orthodox Church) since the beginning. Be it Greek, Russian, Serbian and several other Orthodox variations. But yes it is called Pravoslavna or Pravoslavnaja or the true path church in slavic languages :)

And yes Happy Easter to all Orthodox Christians. Vesela Velika noč vsem pravoslavcem.

Of course, I was just talking it literally for joke's sake. And certainly us wishy-washy atheists (I mean agnostics) should be able to express our religious preferences as well.

I just only recently found out about the strict dietary rules for observance of Orthodox Easter from someone who practices this. Is anyone observing or partially observing?

Actually, very few people are observing this nowadays, and mostly elderly ones at that. I personally had milk and meat even today, even though its just a day before the holy week -in my family we're only fasting on Holy Thursday and Friday. I'm thinking of fasting sometime in the future just to see how it goes, I'll see when I'll come around to it...

Good luck! It sounds like you need a great deal of discipline to get through it.

Some of my elder relatives still practice it, but it's another one of those things that are slowly disappearing; more used to when I was a kid from what I remember.

In my family we usually only fast on Holy Friday (or both of them). And incidentally, while I love Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cuisine, the lent (meatless, dairy-less, somethingelseless) versions of the dishes (e.g. , [url=http://recipes.yooj.me/yabrak-stuffed-grape-leaves/]yabrak) I strongly hate. I'd rather eat something that didn't come with meat in the first place.

Just to be clear: Easter is actually next week (thanks for the wishes though!).

It's on Sunday, May 1st this year, you're too early with celebrations. :P I'll be probably spending time with close family, we will have barbecue, egg fights - the one who wins must eat opponents egg and that's a lot of boiled eggs to eat if you win all the time :D, Russian salad (yummy!) and delicious cakes and sweets.

My mother is. She's vegetarian normally though, so it's not like it's that huge, just milk and eggs really. I'm not religious, but I still have a soft spot for the Orthodox traditions.

Also because the Easter candy goes on sale after everyone else's Easter, you can get it real cheap for Pascha.
