Kind of wrecked your comment with that point 4. If GOG goes belly up then all the games are DRM free, so by and large we lose nothing. A solution could be found where people keep access to all their stuff.

If Steam goes down, all your stuff there is subject to DRM, which means it all becomes inaccessible. We're already at a point where, if Valve wanted to, they could start to push costs of maintenance onto the users with a subscription fee and the users would not have a recourse. Pay up or lose access.

On top of that, there's the whole trading card bot farming nonsense, the scammers, and the loot gambling mechanics, all of which are de facto supported by Steam.

So no, Steam is not a more trustworthy place to buy games, and every game you buy on Steam gives them that much more potential leverage over you.

As for point 1, which digital distributor does more for gamers? Prices are fine, catalog is huge, service is stable, no DRM.

I suspect the explanation in actuality is that GOG doesn't give a toss about GG and just really doesn't want to be tied in with all that noise, particularly not by a hysterical segment of the gaming media that will take any opportunity to take potshots at them.

As for the gamergate-stuff, what it is in reality and how it started are not quite as important from a PR perspective as how it is generally perceived.

Like most I was disappointed in them removing the tweet. But it was only a joke so what ever. But apologizing for a harmless joke at the expense of game 'journalists' and then labeling GamerGate as a hate group? Yeah that doesn't sit well with me. Guess I have to buy Cyberpunk through Steam now (ugh).

The bolded part is what's potentially concerning to me, from appearances gog is moving in a bad direction, enough to keep an eye on their behaviour for other warning signs. It's a strange thing, a hobby trying to cater to people who want to destroy that hobby; but it's happening all over the place.

I've rented a lot of games on steam but always online drm I just could not accept. I've lost hundreds of dollars since I terminated my steam account. Guess what! I get to keep my games purchased on GOG.
