Decent Roguelike RPG Tactical Combat
Completed the game at normal difficulty without handicaps. It took me about 6-8 hours to complete. Optional handicaps and varying amounts of luck can add replayability beyond that. The game is entertaining and I might beat it again 2-3 more times to tryout some builds and events. I would estimate that the game is 1/3 resource management, 1/3 team building and 1/3 battle tactics. For the resource management, you get limited money from fights (more if you win and sometimes fulfill special conditions in battles) and you need to decide to spend it between: Hiring more team members (max of 4), improving their stats, purchasing skills and equipment or healing wounds if they fell in battle. You need to mix those things up to win and you'll get the just of it after a couple of runs. The team building is interesting, but somewhat random. You get a good variety of interesting races, equipment boosting various stats (and that sometimes give a skill) and skills, plus trainable stats (that also randomly level up for fighters that are still standing at the end of battles) that will add good diversity to your fighting roster. However, the fighters you can recruit are randomized, some of them in ways that are good, but many of them in ways that are bad (ex: fighter with high strength and low wisdom that got magic skills that they can barely use thanks to low mana) and your success will be largely determined by what you get (and random rewards after fights too). For some games with a bad starting selection, it is better to restart right away. There are also random events between fights that you can step away from and have the potential to be good or bad. Mostly good to risk if you are not doing well. If you are on a roll, best not to risk most of them. The the tactical combat is fun with the right team, though emperor demands (which apply only to you) get annoying at times. Varying team compositions for your and your opponents makes each fight different. Good game overall.
