I'm in the art gallery, but I can't get the painting on the wall. It just says, "You can't see a painting here." The painting doesn't appear in my inventory and any further looks at the room don't mention it. How can I fix this?

Was it there when you first entered the room? If not, It sounds to me like the other occupant of the dungeon got to the painting first. If you've just started the game, try starting over. If it still isn't appearing, I have no idea what the problem might be.
The painting is mentioned when I first enter the room. I'll see what happens when I start over.

Well, it worked. Still don't know what the original problem was, though.

You sure the Thief didn't take it? He often will rob rooms you previously been in and the description for said room could be written in a way that it will list the painting as being there when it's not. One way to be sure is If you get a decent amount of in game points(make sure he took or you gave him the jewel encrusted egg sometime before this) attack him in his treasure room, you have to do it there or you wont get all the stuff he took back and just fight him if you have a decent amount of points he will be beaten easily and the stuff he stole should appear in his treasure room, again pending you killed him there if not your boned.
