Hello. I seem to be having a bit of trouble.
Zork 1 (etc) crashes when you type SCRIPT to use the auto map feature of trizbort.

It has been suggested on several forum posts that switching to a different interactive fiction reader would be the best choice. However... I have no idea how to do that with the copies of the game that I have purchased from gog.com. So here is my question.

Is it possible to play the gog.com zork games with a different interpreter?
If so, what is the best way to do this? (links would be appreciated)

I have looked into both gargoyle and frotz. However, I'm not really sure what I'm doing.
(I'm running windows 7). Any help would be Greatly appreciated!

*edit*
I have finally had some success thanks to some older forum entries. No luck using the games I bought from gog though... is it possible to run them with something besides dos box or do I have to find them by other means?

This question / problem has been solved by Grue12image
1) Download Windows Frotz
2) Run it
3) Open i.e. Zork 1 data file - go to c:\program files\gog.com\zork anthology\zork 1\data , change openable file type in frotz open window (bottom right) to "infocom data files" and open the zork1.dat file.
4) Play the game.

I can't wait to try this out!!!!!!
Okay, I see now. Thanks for your help. I was still trying to launch the program through the icons gog gave me.

I'm able to open zorkzero.zip with Frotz, but unable to load my savegame, saved with DOSBox. It tells me "This is not a saved game file!". I wanted to SCRIPT my savegame and use that to make an automap, just to see if it would work - any idea how to go about that, then?
I think the original interpreter of the Infocom games uses another save game format than the modern interpreters. Although modern interpreters all use the same save game standard. I'll look around if there is any sort of save converter.
I see.
Anyways, I misunderstood the way "script" works, I thought it would log my actions retro-actively - so in order to make a map, I'd have to visit everything again anyways. And I'll continue playing Zork Zero with DOSBox, I think - I can't get Frotz to display the non-text parts correctly (background frame, map, puzzles, etc.)
Thanks anyways.

Ah I just found out that Frotz can't handle the graphics in theri original form, but you can find converted graphic files for the last few Infocom games with graphics here. The file must have the same name as the data file (that would be ZORK0.blb in this case) and must be in the same folder as the data file (the Zork Zero datafile is ZORK0.ZIP).
That information should probably go in some sticky or so, the documentation of Frotz is a bit strange.

Awesome, thanks for the help! Now there's no reason anymore to not use it!
