I am having difficulty getting the pan option to move slowly enough to explore anything. I have turned it to 'Slow' under the preferences, but I am still zipping around fast enough to make myself dizzy. Is there a way to slow it down further (besides playing it on a much slower machine)?
This question / problem has been solved by nauthizimage
DosBox can throttle the amount of CPU cycles it uses to run the program. Press CTRL-F11 to reduce the max CPU it will use by 5%, and CTRL-F12 to increase it.

I've found that alone doesn't slow it down enough for my liking, though. At least not before I've choked it off so much that the whole thing starts getting choppy. :/
On the other hand, I just thought to edit the configuration file (dosboxZorkNemesis.conf).

In the [cpu] section, setting cycles=25000 worked for me.

Hooray! This worked for me--although I ended up tweaking it to 26500. It's a fine line between choppy and speedy, I see. I'm very much a novice at playing with the settings of things...thanks ever so for your help!
Interesting: This was a problem in both Zork Nemesis and Zork Grand Inquisitor (at least, with my CD versions). With ZN you can solve it with DosBox, but ZGI has only a Windows version.

I haven't played the GOG version yet -- I'd be interested to know if they fixed this issue. Some people at The Zork Library had a rather hacky solution -- they wrote a program called Pan Relief which wiggles the mouse around while you are playing to keep it from scrolling too much. Hopefully GOG has a better solution.
You can also try this:

I'd love to try this solution - but I have a problem with it.....

My keyboard doesn't have a "Scroll Lock" key!

However, following a thread on the Logitec support site (my K/B is a Logitec S520), I have found that I can start up the on screen keyboard, and that gives me access to the scroll lock function.

I am fairly sure you can use Fn+Pause/Break to toggle Scroll Lock on the S520.
Hi

I've just tried your suggestion. It works just as you said.

Thankyou very much for the info, much appreciated.

Pressing the Scroll Lock/Pause Break keys a couple of times can help fixing the speed in Zork Grand Inquisitor, but in case you don't have them on your keyboard or they just don't work, try running the game straight from the game folder. zpeed.exe is what you want. For some bizarre reason, launching the game using the shortcut that the GOG installer places in the Start Menu results in the speed fix not being applied by default.

However, there are drawbacks. The speed fix also reduces the amount of horizontal space available for the mouse pointer, so you will not be able to reach the left and right sides on the top sidebar to access your spells and inventory. Also, you will not be able to access any saves you created previously while playing the game through the shortcut. Again, very bizarre behavior that I don't quite understand, but at least we can work around it.

Oh, also, adjusting the rotation speed on the Preferences screen aborts the speed fix and cannot be reverted, so don't do it!

Okay, well, just suppose for the sake of argument that someone (certainly not me) was foolish enough to adjust the rotation speed in the prefs before noticing this post. What would you suggest they do? Would an uninstall/reinstall work? Is there a less drastic solution?
I find that loading the game, then exiting and then reloading reduces the scroll speed to a more manageable one.

Hi, happy to have found this post as having the same issue. I've tried exiting and reloading but no difference. I will now try the other suggestions.

I'm running Windows 7 on a new machine, and this is the fix that worked for me! Thank you!

And yes you're right that the left and right inventory and spell toolbars are unavailable, but that's ok.
