I've actually played through the game twice. My first playthrough was a bit rough, I died a lot and, when I got to the end, I just couldn't hack it. I enjoyed it enough to start over again, figured I'd post some tips that I figured out the second time through.
Much of this is probably common knowledge for anyone that's ever played a RPG before, but I figured I'd post it all anyway.
1. Invest in the ice tree completely - Not only do you get faster mana and health regen, you also get two powerful AOE attacks as part of the ice fist. You can also acquire an ice scroll later in the game, I think it was called areawind, that plants an ice rune on the ground. The boost in damage is significant and this rune allows you to kill almost everything in the game just by kiting it through the rune. This skill tree is pretty much OP and it makes the combat a lot easier to manage with mouse and keyboard.
2. Explore, don't buy - I don't think I bought gear once the second time through. I was able to find a lot of really good gear by closing portals, finding hidden chests, and completing quests. Towards the middle, when I had the gold to buy a 5000 item, they weren't worth it and I finished the game with like 12000 gold and 20-some potions. I think I got most of it from the portals, but there were a few chests as well. The game really rewards you for going out of the main areas with good items.
3. Everything has a purpose - Those ridiculous 5000 gold glasses you buy in Telos are for a quest, so are those gold blocks you find. Some of the latter are in places that you can't re-visit, so you might want to prioritize finding them if you want to do everything.
4. All the areas on the map are accessible - Some areas you won't enter unless you've talked to someone or have an item, but they can all be visited under the right conditions. I thought they were a part of a future update the first time through, until I talked to the right people or had the right items. Some are non-essential to the main storyline, but talking to some of the NPCs will open them up to you, so will acquiring some items.
5. Resistance gear - I found the resistance gear later in the game to be more important than affinity, because there are some enemies you fight that have really powerful spells and your damage output is already pretty high. I'd say about halfway through I switched to increasing resistance and it really helped, more than affinity did.
Hope that helps some.
