The game refuses to continue after I do the jump-out-of-the-boat thing at the start. Sometimes the lifeguard isn't there when I snap back, or shes stuck in a loop covering her eyes from the sun.

Anyone else have this problem?

I have the same problem. It's annoying, I hope that someone has an answer. :-(
Have you tried any of the basics, like altering the game's compatibility settings or running as admin? Do the two of you have anything in common on your systems, like hardware or OS version?

I'll give the compatibility modes a shot.

I'm running a Bootcamp'd Macbook Pro with Windows 7.
I have this problem as well. I thought it was some sort of bug with the game, but after watching some Youtube videos, I found that actually my game is running in slow motion. I am not sure why, but I suspect that this problem may be related to the engine that powers the game (If it's unreal then this would make sense, as the Unreal Engine is notorious for running poorly on newer computers). That said, I still have no idea on how to fix the beach glitch and the slow motion problem.
It is as I suspected. The slow mo and beach may be related. I ran the game in window mode and everything worked like it should. This may only be a temporary fix, but trying running the game in window mode by going into xiii.ini near the bottom of the system folder (in your XIII directory: C:\Program Files\GOG.com\XIII\system by default) and where it says StartupFullscreen switch it to false (under [WinDrv.WindowsClient]; it should look like this: StartupFullscreen=False).
The slowmo sounds like CPU throttling. UE2 based games don't always play nice on laptops with speed step or aggressive thermal management. If you have a laptop, try setting to maximum performance mode (or whatever it's called for you), and desktops could try disabling some of the power saving features in the BIOS, though it's a lot of work. I remember an older program, GPL Power Monger, that would fully utilize the CPU, so the throttling wouldn't take effect, but it had mixed results on newer computers with SMP, so no promises.

This seems to fix the problem for the time being. I'll try some of the other stuff Kogged mentioned, too.

This didn''t work for me. Any other ideas? My laptop is already set to high performance mode.
Switching off the full screen "solves" the slow motion, but the girl is still standing and doing nothing and I can't continue. Maybe the problem is in the multi-core CPU? I don't know, I hope someone will solve the problem, I really want to play the game!
I have a 6-core cpu, and no problems here.
Although, I disabled HyperThreading also.
Do you guys have HyperThreading on?

How do you run a game in windowed mode on windows 7? Also I have the same lifeguard looping problem.

I have the same problem with the girl on the beach.

Try opening up the Task Manager, right-click XIII.exe, select Set Affinity and only have one CPU ticked. I had that problem as well and this did the trick for me.

No luck when I try this.
