Hi all

Forgive me if this is a silly question, I'm afraid tech stuff is not my strongest suit. I notice that the official "Xenonauts" updates are about four versions ahead of GOG,.(Although they've apparently had a misstep and reverted the last one.)

I've just re-downloaded "Xenonauts" after a lengthy absence (and after struggling with the GOG downloader which refused to work, I finally downloaded it the old way) and also a separate patch (from memory 1.54)

I guess I've got lazy with the way my Steam titles update automatically and was surprised to see the patch separate with GOG. But if it is separate then is there a reason to wait for GOG to supply it?

I'm not sure what's been updated in the latest versions, whether it's improvements or bug fixes. But updating to the latest stable version before embarking on a new career seems like a good idea. Can I do that? Or am I better waiting for GOG to catch up.

It's not a silly question at all ;) And there's no silly question !
On Steam the version has reached version 1.58 but it is now reverted to version 1.56 due to some bug(s) introduced needing to be solved. To summarize... GOG (and others non-steam distributors) are always late compared to Steam, because it takes a lot of time to the developer and to GOG's team, and the developer didn't want to multiply updates which may contain new bugs (see here).
So, 1.54 is the latest most stable release available on GOG, but still contains some bugs which may have been solved in the further versions.
Steam has been reverted to 1.56 the time they're solving a "big" bug introduced in 1.58, so it is "only" 2 versions ahead.

Here you can see a changelog of the 1.5 branch. All further versions are bugfixes as far as I now.

Personally, I suggest to play the 1.5 branch (it contains a lot of improvements and bugfixes), so version 1.54 if you want to play now (but there may/will be some bugs), or to wait the "final" version if you want the best experience possible (which I personally advice ;)).
It should take some weeks, but it shouldn't be too much long if you can wait (waiting is hard but... the version will have so many bugs eradicated ^^) : "weeks" is the worst case, they're actually working on it (see my first link : "For everyone else, we're planning on investigating the reported bug in more detail over the next few days and will put out an updated version once we fully understand the situation.").

So sorry not to have replied. I don't check this forum regularly and can you believe it is already August?!

In between posts I had a fault on my hard drive which lost me everything on there and as yet I haven't got around to re-installing this. So I expect by now the update situation will have moved on. :)
