Getting the message that the game needs to be updated before I can run it on Sonoma. Is there a way around this, or do I just need to wait for an update?

Sorry, that's a problem with your 1000$ planned obsolescence machine, not the game. Try this, a system that won't arbitrarily cut you off from playing your game from 2014. (Or 10 years ago.)
The simple gist is, the game is 32 bit, and GOG stuck the important information at the wrong end of the game page.
