I loved the original xCom games (not so much the reboots) because of the creepy-weird-alien-invasion atmosphere that permeated the games--the music and sound effects, as well as the graphics, of course. There was none of the ra-ra-ra/gung-ho "action/Rambo" themed music--and so the original games kept me tense, on the edge of my seat, and feeling like there *really was* an invasion and that Mother Earth is fighting back...;)

This may sound silly to some, I guess...but the so-called "reboots" seem to emphasize the strategy and military aspects while at the same time going fairly light on the creepy, other-worldly atmosphere of the originals. In the originals it often seemed that civilians were involved as much in the resistance efforts as the military.

That's what's been lacking in the reboots I've tried--the general creepiness I loved so much in the originals--spine-tingling creepiness--just isn't there. The newer games get close to it, but never seem to quite get there.

Anyway...do you find Xenonauts creepy?....;)
I've only just started playing it yesterday, so haven't seen if they have the old 'cow dissection rooms', but there is a 'creepiness' factor so far, especially on the geo-map. You get news reports and locations popping up of things like abductions (mass abductions as well), ocean 'dead zones' appearing, military transports being shot down. It helps create the suspense that there's an invasion building.

Some of the game's soundtrack, especially during the squad/ground assaults, is definitely creepy. This game definitely serves as a true updated X-COM game, even moreso than the commercial and modern X-COM titles.
Thanks much for your input, guys!

+1 to this!

IMO it is THE definitive update to XCOM. They simplified just enough, but not too much.

Aliens aren't quite as diverse as the original.

However, there is definitely one in particular that qualifies as "creepy". I won't spoil it further, but when you first encounter them they will freak you out - especially when you see what they do to your guys... *shudder* Not a nice way to go...
The atmosphere in this game is just right right - a bit creepy and tense. I haven't played much of the XCOM/UFO games so I can't compare but I can imagine it would be similar.

I'm playing my first game right now, Dec '79. Got 3 bases, just built a couple of Corsairs and even got my funding nicely on the positive side. But as I have noticed before, that can change very fast if shit hits the fan :D
