there is no and not possible to have default settngs in general. this one cycles is important (fps affected and so game speed) and most individual per user settng at same time. the only proper argument there are auto.
better configure steps for switching cycles by hotkeys. its too large by both dosbox default and gog default. and use such hotkeys. Just like entirely not possible to fix anything here (no else possible default except auto) its not possble to have proper speed in DosBox for this game without correcring it by cycles hotkeys. You need differ cyces limit for Globe mode and for battle mode. it was the same issue before update too.
Best solution is avoiding using GOG versions of DosBox/ScummVM. They all indeed messed (only few have minor issues solving by conf editing, most else are fundamental). Wrong default settings indeed. Custom game builds in ScummVM. But most important - lack of superior and latest patched Windows versions.
It not only DosBox issue. Windows, Win 95/98 and Windows ME are so much superior to PC-DOS in terms of gaming, with no such issues as game speed or sound choppy. Such are not emulation issue. It is DOS issues. very depend on hardware and set up of it and game built-it hardware setups (chosing sound card), multiple games exes for differ render modes. How games originally meant to looks and sounds like are become possible only after Windows (mostly after Win95+)
X-com get more updates from 2K next to legacy X-Com Collector's Edition (WIN only and most patched much above DOS builds) with more newest above DOS patches.
Not sure how it is now for XC1. X-com 2 on GOG actualy based on such updated 2K build and DID HAVE Windows build x-com2_patched.exe in game folder. GOG just lamo and lame way chose to set DosBox as default. As more GOG-Galaxy compatible (in their sh!t police to prefer Galaxy).
X-com before recent upate was just DOS RIP-ed game.
Until you find your way to play superior version - Win/patched.exe Win or OpenXCom - manually update dosbox component files and MANUALLY CONFIGURE conf iles. They are there to be configured, not to be ignored. Thats theyre idea, design. DosBox as any emulation and VM not supposed to have default configuration. Every apps ini-conf files are designed to be configured. That the idea of app having such files. Otherwise it would be just one exe, dll or exe+dll. That the idea of PC.
OpenXCom is not X-com, for all its advantages and disadvantages (bad dev process, roadmap and lack of stable releases are main one). But DOS build have ZERO advantages to stay on it. And when i state something i always mea literal meaning, as a matter of fact.
