Hi All,
Yes, there's all sorts of info out there on why Long WOTC or Long War 2 won't work with the GOG version, but, with a bit of help from the previous posts here, as well as around the net, I've at least been able to start LWOTC and the first mission has loaded. Who know if it will continue like this but maybe someone smarter can figure that out.

What I downloaded:
Community Highlander v1.22.7 for LWOTC-757-1-0-beta-5-1637616302.zip
Nexusmods at /xcom2/mods/757?tab=files&file_id=2676

1.0 beta 4.1 (full release - stable)-757-1-0-beta-4-1-1623141488.zip
Nexusmods at /xcom2/mods/757?tab=files&file_id=2627

For info, I couldn't get any of the newer version working via the same method.

Create a \Mods folder in your
C:\GOG\XCOM 2\XCom2-WarOfTheChosen\XComGame
Extract files in their individual folders into this new Mods folder i.e.
...\Mods\DLC2CommunityHighlander
...\Mods\LongWarOfTheChosen
...\Mods\X2WOTCCommunityHighlander

Either version of the X2ComCommunityHighlander, 1.21 with 1.0 beta 4.1 zip or the 1.22 version, worked for me so make sure and use one or the other and don't copy over

Go to folder
C:\GOG\XCOM 2\XCom2-WarOfTheChosen\XComGame\Config
and open "DefaultModOptions.ini"

Add the following text upder the: [Engine.XComModOptions]

ActiveMods="DLC2CommunityHighlander"
ActiveMods="X2WOTCCommunityHighlander"
ActiveMods="LongWarOfTheChosen"

Save File.

The order seems to matter.

For Info, the DLC2CommunityHighlander is if you have the other XCOM2 DLCs installed, I think it's specifically for "Alien Hunters" if you are using. If you don't have Alien Hunters, don't add as it may cause crashes.

That is it from the set up side of things. Once you start WOTC for the first time, it may be a bit slow. The graphics need to be readjusted to what you want to use as well.

Note: An error message appears at start-up with the following:
Long War of the Chosen missing Required Mods
Please activate the following mods and restart or Long War of the Chosen will not Work
- robojumperSquadSelect_WOTC
- BetterSecondWaveSupport
- WOTCRevertOverwatchRules
"Accept" or "Do Not Show me Again"

The game starts if you accept so we'll see what happens as it progresses. I'd keep it showing on Startup in case you need to track it down in future.

It's not the latest versions, but it at least starts. I had no joy with newer Revs. This apporach works for Long War 2 as well, just put it in the C:\GOG\XCOM 2\XComGame\ folder. Don't double up, just put the LW2 in the XCom 2 folder and the LWOTC stuff in the XCOM2-WarOfTheChosen folder.

I hope this helps and if there's any tweaks to add, please Comment and share the knowledge!

I just installed it 2 days ago after 4h debugging, i downloaded all the mods from steam and, my problem was then whenever i activated the Community Highlander game crashed before the menu screen, what i finally figured out was that default mod names don't always work, in case of steam if you unzip it is like "1134256495 X2WOTCCommunityHighlander v1.24.0", after renaming this into the same name that .XComMod file uses in this case "X2WOTCCommunityHighlander" everything started working like a charm, as stupid as it might sound, all my mod folders used the steam syntax and they all worked, except the Community Highlander so the solution wasn't obvious to me.

Anyway just posted this in case someone has similar problem and finds this helpful.

Bro, you are a diamond! I was almost gave up to run it with a GOG version of the game - now it works, amazingly just renaming the mod folder indeed resolved the crash, as per logs it was just crashing silently no specific error
