Hi everyone!

I have a Saitek x52 HOTAS system that I use to play games like Flight Simulator. Over the years I've purchased a lot of games on GOG that could benefit from this, such as the X series, Independence War 2, Descent, etc.

When I set up my controls, I've always defaulted the controls to what I've become accustomed to with Microsoft Flight Simulator, which is that pushing the Joystick left or right (X axis on the controls if I'm not mistaken) rolls the ship/aircraft left and right. Then I pull or push the Y-Axis to make my turn before rolling again to become level. The rotation part of my joystick (I think Windows calls it ZR-axis) then controls the rudder/turning horizontally. This is what I'm used to.

However, I've noticed that in games like X, it seems like Roll is not as essential as "normal" turning, and playing through the tutorial both ways, it seems like I'm able to control the ship easier if I assign "normal" turning to the X axis and assign roll to the rotation axis on my stick. This in turn, though, creates a little bit of conflict in my brain because I'm so used to using the X-axis as roll, but I think I would get over this after a little bit of time. So it seems that both don't immediately strike me as perfect.

For all you experienced X players out there (or any players of other games I"m talking about like Independence War 2), what would you say is the better/more intuitive way of controlling the ship? should I assign roll or turn to the X axis? Thanks!
A spaceship should NOT fly like an airplane. If it does, the game/sim developer has failed. I use my stick only in Independence War and I've Found Her and just used whatever the ready made profile assigned. Sorry but forgot what that was. Not very helpful, am I? :-S I prefer mouse and keyboard in the X games.

I would say that experimenting until you have found the right settings for each game probably would be best but then it would be hard to switch between games. I know my games have different setups and I get a bit confused if I keep switching. Already X3:Reunion and X3:Terran Conflict behave differently.

Good point about not controlling like an airplane. I think I'll just use whatever the game deems it should be.
