I love the original Worms game. For me it has a simplistic beauty in both gameplay and artwork that is very rarely found in games outside the "indie" realm. I especially love those little worms that on so few pixels (each worm is 9 pixels high!!!) manage to have more character than a whole team of Modern Warfare models.

The later Worms games never did a whole lot for me. The art style was just too boring. The worms looked like a million other cartoon characters. Of course, much of the charm of the original worms were their pixelated look that would seem very much out of place in a modern HD game, but I started wondering if their was something in-between. High-resolution, but still somehow blocky and rough instead of overly smooth and cartooning....

Today I started drawing... very, very carefully. Quadrupling the resolution until I reached the 256x magnification needed for HD (yes, you really need that much data: 16x along each axis will produce an image that will fit a HD screen with 2x antialiasing), trying to NOT add any detail, just bringing out what was already there:

It's not exactly high art, but maybe it's enough to let you imagine how a worms remake could look. (if you can do better, I'd be very grateful for other interpretations of the original worms characters).

I can see myself playing such a remake, but I'm wondering if I'm the only one...
I love that, myself. Looks pretty awesome.
I have nothing against the other worms games but this would be an interesting mod. I like the retro worm look! :)
