I am attempting to use the wizardry 8 portrait editor to edit some portraits, but the program keeps crashing after trying to Import portraits into the game.
I tried using paint.net before but it doesn't export images into 8-bit color depths (which it needs).
I switche to grimp and changed the images to have the 8-bit color depth, but this causes them to crash. Anybody have similar issues?

Sir tech used a proprietary format for its portraits and other pics with extension .sti,
the portrait editor you probably use, aka Wiz8PortEdit.exe 249.856 byte, creates a patch.00n file with one part,
the other is placed as mundane files in the appropriate folders.
if you followe the instructions in one of the 2 readmes of the assumed wiz8portedit precisely and get no working result, try the real thing:

Check this thread for the recipe, incl the links for dlds:
http://www.postcount.net/forum/showthread.php?159237-Portrait-editor-and-mod-question&p=2551774&viewfull=1#post2551774
the "message" link contains some background info, search for section headers:
"I need to convert TGA images to 16-bit colour depth ..." and "How to create new large and small portraits ?"

There is also this message with the same info and some more on top:

Last not least there is this guy myoffice91 who is revamping the Wiz8 exe,
and has also increased the max numbers of portrait the game can use,
created a manager for portraits etc pp, but unfortunately i have no link to his progs at hand,
perhaps you find them in this mammoth thread:
https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/cosmicforge/suggest-to-improve-the-version-of-cosmic-forge-202-t201.html
or the 2019 version::
https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/cosmicforge/suggest-to-improve-the-version-of-cosmic-forge-201-t181.html
at least his later posts are in russian, so you may need a translator.

He is also active on the russian Wi8 board at vk.com/wizardry_8, there should be info about and links to his progs.

If everything else fails, you can contact him directly via comment on one of his videos, channel:

Oh, and iirc the modder Gray Tiefling published some portraits, linked in message:
http://www.postcount.net/forum/showthread.php?698-Downloads-and-Helpfull-Links&p=3846087&viewfull=1#post3846087
and
http://www.postcount.net/forum/showthread.php?698-Downloads-and-Helpfull-Links&p=3735785&viewfull=1#post3735785

I also have published some, but they are rather weird, like this one:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/753q1ub6z126g10/Lizardman_portrait.rar/file
and there are some in this package:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/7ztx3jyl0cuhvn6/Wiz8_various_mico_mods.rar/file

I know this is a lot to read, maybe more letters than the number of pixels in a the large portrait,
but at least you can't complain that no comprehensive answer has come ;)

Thanks for the response!
I resolved the issue I had (switched to gimp and turned off RLE compression when exporting) but a new one came up and I think one of the things you wrote will help me out!
